  • Binary System Podcast #522 – WTNV #293 “The Boys (1946), Better Call Saul, and Nope 12.09.2026 31dk
This episode originally broadcast on September 10, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/09/binary-system-podcast-522-wtnv-293-the-boys-1946-better-call-saul-and-nope/On this week’s Night Vale recap the radio station is still being run by the late Leonard “Gone But Still Talking” Burton because Cecil is still missing. OR IS HE? No, he is, but not for long…Anyway, Leonard gives us an episode from 1946 where the Boys have come home from the Great War. Are they a little weird? Sure! Are they destroying property? You bet! Have the horrors of war turned them into shambling creatures bent on destroying reality as we know it? Absolutely! But everybody processes trauma differently, and who doesn’t need to do a little heroin to cope?Speaking of trauma, we also recap season 3 episode 5 of Better Call Saul, which can be summed up with “Jimmy will do anything in his power to break Chuck on the witness stand, and he’s very good at it.”Finally, on Kathryn’s recommendation Elizabeth watched 2022’s Nope and HOLY COW THAT WAS WEIRD. But good! It rides the edge of almost being too much in terms of gore, but never takes it too far. Props to the designers: the alien and the way it moves is so menacing and unpleasantly organic, we loved it.This episode’s outro is a clip from Night Drive by 1000 Handz. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/09/binary-system-podcast-521-hugo-awards-better-call-saul-and-in-memoriam/Yes yes, we know we said we’d have an episode of Welcome to Night Vale to recap this week, but in our defense we are BAD AT COUNTING, and we won’t be able to recap the new Night Vale episode until next week.At least we have a few other things to discuss. The good: Hugo Awards (with a brief mention of Ursula Vernon’s Fabulous Hat). The not so good, or at the very least the sad: we lost Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Cullen last week and we are not okay. Finally, we watched another episode of Season 3 of Better Call Saul, a show which keeps getting better and better and which we probably should have gotten around to watching a long time ago. (Brief spoilers for Breaking Bad, or at least how the story of Gus Fring wrapped up, and wasn’t that amazing?)Play the Podcast Below | Download the MP3 | Subscribe via Apple Podcasts | RSS FeedYou can also listen to this episode on our Binary System Podcast channel on Spotify! This episode’s outro is a clip from 909 Problems by Grumplefunk.Check out all the Hugo Award Winners, Nominees, and the reviews! If you’re curious about that last outtake clip in this episode…*sigh*. Look, GarageBand, we talked about this. You promised not to cut off the end of my recordings anymore, and I heavily implied that I wouldn’t throw you into a Microsoft Windows 95 floppy disk and run you through an industrial paper shredder. • Binary System Podcast #520 – The final two episodes of Beastars 31.08.2026 37dk
This episode originally broadcast on August 28, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/08/binary-system-podcast-520-the-final-two-episodes-of-beastars/It’s finally here, the last two episodes of the very last season of Beastars and……okay, we’re not gonna lie, it’s not great. Spoiler warnings for everything, including the rest of this description, but what the absolute hell. Why reveal the (super shocking and out of nowhere) truth about the artificial meat if you’re not going to do anything with it? Why waste time with the MMA rabbit fighter or Riz when you could’ve shown the drama club play they’ve been working on all season? What the hell was up with the lizard tail and the bomb? Who won the Black Market Turf War? Why give us all these gorgeous animated sequences only to throw Melon’s Mom to the C-Team animators? And why give Juno a measly 15 seconds at the end of the series and ONLY SHOW THE BACK OF HER HEAD?We also have a tangent into Ted Lasso and Lore Olympus only because they’re guilty of the same Telling Instead Of Showing nonsense that could’ve been from time constraints but is probably because they were too chicken to write the difficult scenes. This episode’s outro is a clip from Phonk House Hybrid by Alex Morgan. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. • Binary System Podcast #519 – WTNV #292 “Collectibles (1999)” and Beastar 24.08.2026 29dk
This episode originally broadcast on August 20, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/08/binary-system-podcast-519-wtnv-292-collectibles-1999-and-beastars/It’s another flashback episode as Leonard Burton tries to distract us from the fact that Cecil is still missing. This week’s trip to the archives takes us to 1999, where a young Cecil is dipping his toes into the information superhighway and spending way too much on Beanie Babies from the brand-new online auction site: eBay. Ahhh, remember when eBay was new, and the experience of finding just that right bit of ephemera was still fresh, and upper executives of the company weren’t spending months terrorizing journalists for saying mean things about them? (Okay, that last bit has nothing to do with tonight’s episode, but dear Lord, have you read about that whole mess?)Anyway, this being Night Vale, the Beanie Babies are alive, the DJ’s are surprisingly nurturing, the secret police force is useless and not paying attention, and the local pastor is trying to stop young people from being, well, young. In other news, Legoshi in Beastars is still being impulsive and we say the phrase “Shi-Shi Gumi” a lot. We’re also catching up on Better Call Saul, and Jordan Peel’s film Nope is weird scary fun. This episode’s outro is a clip from Yet Another Analog Dance Track by TeknoAXE.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. • Binary System Podcast #518 – Beastars and Better Call Saul 14.08.2026 23dk
This episode originally broadcast on August 13, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/08/binary-system-podcast-518-beastars-and-better-call-saul/On this week’s recap of Beastars season 3 episode 21 (…yes 21, we doublechecked this time it really is 21…) we ask the important questions: will Louis end up with Juno, or pine away for Legoshi? What’s up with the MMA rabbit woman? Why do the A-Team animators always handle the bits with the rats? And what the ABSOLUTE HELL IS GOING ON WITH LEGOSHI’S GRANDMOTHER? Seriously, the bit with the venom and her “thoughtfulness” made NO sense, WHY are the women on this show so dumb? After that we have some random tangents into Murder Drones, Raised by Wolves, Kathryn’s thoughts on season four of Better Call Saul, and the fact that when Elizabeth said she’d finished season one of Better Call Saul she actually meant season two because SHE IS BAD AT COUNTING.This episode’s outro is a clip from Mixed Salad by Grumplefunk. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. To celebrate (and to cover for the fact that Cecil is missing) guest radio host Leonard Burton is sharing an episode from the archives! So send your Betamax back to the store, grab yourself an Orange Julius, and make sure you have your credit card handy for all those late-night 1-900 calls, because we're going back to August 1st 1987!It's the grand opening of the new Night Vale Mall, and while certain things haven't been finished yet (like "stores" or "ceilings" or "floors") we can still wander past the freestanding escalators and reminisce about some of the ways the 80's were just weird. (Our favorite things about the Hickory Farm store in the DeSoto Square Mall were the strawberry candies and the frozen yogurt, and we will not be taking questions at this time.)Then we recap episode 20 (yes we know we said 19, we are bad with numbers) of the final season of Beastars where Legoshi is having the worst luck, and then talk a little about Better Call Saul and last weekend's GenCon (sorry you had to deal with a tornado, folks. We're glad nobody died.)This episode's outro is a clip from Analogue Restart by TeknoAXE.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/07/binary-system-podcast-516-galaxycon-san-diego-comic-con-and-beastars/Last weekend Binary System went to ALL THE CONVENTIONS. Well, two of them. But they were big ones! This week we're recapping GalaxyCon in Raleigh and Comic-Con in San Diego, going over the good (Cosplay! Cute merch! Famous artists! Amazing Digital Circus meetup!!) the bad (ugh it was hot in San Diego) (oh like 79 degrees? - Kathryn) (Yes all right shut up - Elizabeth), and the ugly (on both the east coast and the west coast the LINES in ARTIST ALLEY ARE OUT OF CONTROL.)After that we recapped episode 19 of the final season of Beastars. In short, the A-team animators are still knocking it out of the park, Haru is being stupid, and Legoshi is a total chump. This episode's outro is a clip from Rigged Game by Grumplefunk. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/07/binary-system-podcast-515-beastars-and-preview-to-the-odyssey-and-comic-con/This week's recap of Beastars features multiple instances of the word "weird". Look, we know this is a fantasy show, and it doesn't pay to look too closely into how a society of carnivores living side-by-side with potential food would actually work. But Bill the Tiger found a baby chick in his ramen, and him trying to raise it is like a high schooler trying to raise a baby that they found in their dinner, and it's actually a touching story that shows a new side of Bill's character, but we're sorry, that's weird. Also weird? HARU HAVING A DEATH WISH. That is all.San Diego Comic-Con and GalaxyCon Raleigh start this week, so both halves of the Binary System Podcast will be making an appearance! Oh, and The Odyssey is currently in theaters. It sounds like an amazing experience, and people with rage-filled criticisms about American accents and Christopher Nolan not casting the "right" people should probably settle down. This episode's outro is a clip from Indo Bop by TeknoAXE.Stick around after the outro song for two minutes of emergency sirens, otherwise known as Why We Don't Usually Record During Rush Hour.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/07/binary-system-podcast-514-beastars-and-r-i-p-sam-neill/Our plan tonight was to recap episode 17 of the final season of Beastars (you call THAT a "disguise", Louis? Really?? Also, we're really hoping Juno gets a happily ever after, but man alive it doesn't look good), and we do, but first we had to talk about the passing of Sam Neill. He was one of our favorite actors in some of our favorite films, but he was also by all accounts a genuinely nice guy. Thank you for all the amazing characters, Sam, you were the best, and we'll really miss the posts from your farm. And of course, we've got the usual random tangents, like stupidly long seasons of TV, Netflix Bloat, Florida Supercon, and how you really should be nice to the Comic-Con volunteers. This episode's outro is a clip from Juno by Chronox.Sam Neill was a favorite in our Watch Party conversations, here's a few:Hunt for the WilderpeopleThe Hunt for Red OctoberIn the Mouth of MadnessJurassic ParkIt can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/07/binary-system-podcast-513-beastars-godzilla-minus-one-and-the-amazing-digital-circus/Yes, we know we said on the previous episode that we would have a Welcome to Night Vale recap this week. But there wasn't a new episode posted, because Welcome to Night Vale is on hiatus in July. Welcome to Night Vale is always on hiatus in July. Twelve years on and you'd think we'd remember that...So instead we've got a recap of season 3 episode 16 of Beastars (oh the angst, oh the unconvincing bait-and-switch from the end of episode 15...), and Elizabeth finally watched Godzilla Minus One so we need to talk about that. Elizabeth also has a lot of fun tidbits of information about The Amazing Digital Circus to discuss, because even the end of the series hasn't changed the fact that every bit of it has just eaten our brains. This episode's outro is a clip from Final Flight by Chronox. It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/06/binary-system-podcast-512-the-amazing-digital-circus-the-last-act-with-all-the-spoilers/It's been a wild ride for the Binary System Podcast team as we binged The Amazing Digital Circus over the last two and a half months. Kudos to everyone who's been following this absolutely stunning animated series for, what, two and a half years? I think everyone can agree that the final episode was worth the wait, even if it broke our hearts at least once.Spoliers ahoy as we recap the series finale and occasionally get sidetracked by Swamp Thing, the correct use of pronouns, and Indie animators helping other indie animators. This episode's outro is a clip from Circus by Six Umbrellas.Correction: Elizabeth says the live action actors we see in the post-credit scene are the voice actors. That's incorrect, there were different actors for the vocal parts and the visual parts.Correction the second: Elizabeth should also know better than to contradict Kathryn because Kathryn was right: when Gangle walks past Zooble she grabs Zooble's hand, not the other way around.Check out the very sweet thank-you video by TADC voice actors here.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. This episode originally broadcast on June 18, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/06/binary-system-podcast-511-backrooms-and-wtnv-290-a-solution/We're so glad we actually went to see Backrooms while it was still in the theater, partly because it's exactly the kind of horror movie we like: scary, light on the gore, smart, just enough jump scares, and most of all intensely WEIRD. It's deliciously unsettling and we could just marinate in that uncanny anti-nostalgia for ages. But we also love that we get to see the collaborative speculation happening on the internet in real time; not just the discussions on memory and trauma, but also the questions the movie leaves unanswered: what does the ending mean? Where exactly is the entrance to the Backrooms? Was it copying Clark before he started exploring...or is it also messing around with time...?But before we jump into the Backrooms (...not literally, yikes..) we have a quick recap of the latest Night Vale, which gives us a solution to the locked room mystery, but leaves us with a few questions there as well. (First and foremost, is the solution really that hand-wavey, or is that another red herring?)This episode's outro is a clip from just laying there. by Mark Lingard. We mentioned Vaporama Vision a few times this episode, they're our current favorite Liminal Spaces artist. Some of our favorite Backrooms fanart so far is:Bojack Horseman / Backrooms mashupAmazing Digital Circus / Backrooms mashupA portrait of the directorAs for Portal quotes, if you look up Cave Johnson you can find tons of J.K. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/06/binary-system-podcast-510-pluribus-episode-9-season-finale/What do you know, we actually managed to finish watching a season of TV less than six months late! And wow, what a season. Pluribus has had some amazing episodes, with a story that's been both delightful and heartbreaking and which never went where we were expecting. So it really means something to say that the season finale managed to be the most surprising episode of the show so far. In amongst Carol having a tropical vacation with her chaperone and butting heads with her would-be fellow freedom fighter (Manusos, snapping your fingers at someone is rude, use your words), there were no fewer than three moments that knocked us back a step, even though the seeds for them had already been planted without us even realizing that's what they were. This episode's outro is a clip from Mechanical Static by TeknoAXEIt can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/06/binary-system-podcast-509-wtnv-289-the-collection-plate-and-pluribus-episode8/On this week's Night Vale recap, Jalen is being awfully understanding about being in jail for a murder his dead doppelganger (probably) committed. But a secret ally is sending clues that could help Cecil solve the case, if Cecil can stop obsessing about his stapler long enough to figure it out. And if they don't get murdered by the real killer, of course. Then we dive into Pluribus episode 8, and go over all the new information about the Hive Mind that Carol's uncovered, and how tough it is to stay stubborn and distant when an ENTIRE PLANET is nerding out about your book. This episode's outro is a clip from Entering the Treeline by Visager.Clarification: yes St. Alia of the Knife is dune. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/05/binary-system-podcast-508-wtnv-288-doubles-anonymous-and-pluribus-episode-7/The investigation into the murder of Marcus Vanston is moving ahead at breakneck speed. And for this week only, Cecil's covering the latest developments in a hard-boiled, film noir style that only gets weirder (and more fun) when you add Night Vale's tendency to mess with metaphors (we WILL be trying to work "the hornet's fedora" into conversations from now on.)Episode 7 of Pluribus is less quirky and more beautiful, heartbreaking, and grim, as Carol and Manousos each choose their own methods for resisting the Hive Mind and getting on with their lives. And oddly, both of them reach a similar kind of failure. This episode's outro is a clip from Baroque Ballroom by TeknoAXE.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/05/binary-system-podcast-507-the-amazing-digital-circus-episodes-6-7-and-8/If we had to recap the last three episodes of The Amazing Digital Circus VERY quickly, we'd say episode 6 is delightfully violent, episode 7 is a kick in the heart, and episode 8 is terrifying. We mention at the beginning of the episode that there's no need to recap all three point by point. So we totally recapped them point by point. In detail. (Massive spoiler warnings of course.) In our defense, we only started watching this show a couple months ago. We had to cram into one hour all the freaking out that the rest of the fans have been doing FOR TWO YEARS.After the recap we remind everybody that Transformers: The Movie - The Apology Tour is coming up soon, so go find yourself a new Transformers shirt. This episode's outro is a clip from Tense and Falling from Free the Muses.Correction: Hugh's already been to MegaCon. He's headed to SuperCon!It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. But mostly there's this sound, up past the clouds and the satellites. The noise is a lot like things that have no business having sounds, like what the smell of electricity sounds like, and the only thing we know for sure is that it's somehow a lot worse when we stop hearing it.Then we're off to The Amazing Digital Circus episodes 4 and 5. This series has kind of eaten our brain lately, so we're just going to have to watch the entire weird season before we can move on to something else. (Bonus: episode 5 is the one with corn.)This episode's outro is a clip from Jiggled by Grumplefunk. We found an entire playlist of the Amazing Digital Circus Intermission video set to different songs and you need to watch all of it.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. • Binary System Podcast #504 - Pluribus episode 6 06.05.2026 34dk
This episode originally broadcast on April 30, 2026. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/04/binary-system-podcast-504-pluribus-episode-6/We've really got to hand it to the creators of Pluribus. This episode took a dark turn; the Hive Mind may be the vanguard of an alien invasion that's either very efficient, or very much not efficient at all. Either way, steps have been taken to try to keep all seven point something billion hosts on the Earth from starving to death, and the reveal manages to avoid showing anything gory while still being really, really disturbing. You'd think that would be the only thing on Carol's mind, but let's face it, loneliness sucks. The Hive mind is currently not speaking to her, and the rest of the class has decided to not invite her to their gab sessions, which means the entire world doesn't want her around, and that shit stings.Listen in as we talk about gorgeous parties in Vegas and short-circuited storylines, with some digressions to discuss Spanish grammar and wonder how the heck you get FaceTime to let someone into a call? This episode's outro is a clip from Serenity by TeknoAXE.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2026/04/binary-system-podcast-593-wtnv-285-our-ice-cream-truck-of-infinite-sorrows-and-pluribus/On this week’s Night Vale recap, when the creepy ice cream truck appeared we thought it was one of those awful stories about creepy ice cream guys preying on people. It’s not. IT’S SO MUCH WORSE.After that we have a spoiler-filled recap of Pluribus episode 5: how did the Hive Mind react to Carol’s stunt with the truth serum? With the biggest, most passive-aggressive breakup EVER.Plus there’s segues into phone scammers and safe words, books about paladins, Netflix kids accounts, and a loooooong tangent about Torchwood and how we’re still pretty mad at them for all the torture porn. This episode's outro is a clip from Undimmed Eyes by Pamela Yuen.It can be really easy to slip into doom and despair at the state of the world right now, but there are things you can do to help.
