  • You Can Still Do Your Job, but Do You Have Enough Left for the Life You Built? 16.09.2026 1h
You know the “vacation”... You finally get away from work, sit down with a coffee, and then check your email anyway. You tell yourself it will only take a minute, because you would rather stay on top of things than come home to a mess. Then you return from vacation feeling like you need another vacation.I’ve done it, too.It made me question the way we’ve been talking about work-life balance.Balance assumes there is a fixed amount of energy to divide between work and everything else.I’m more interested in work-life capacity: having enough available energy to succeed at work without using up what you need to enjoy the rest of your life.Do you have enough capacity to succeed at work and still have something left for the life you built? That question sits at the intersection of Kevin’s work and mine.Kevin looks at the system around the leader: organizational culture, expectations, workload, strengths, and the behaviors leaders model. I look at the system within the leader: energy generation, nutrient use, cognitive stamina, nervous-system recovery, and the metabolic patterns that determine how much capacity is actually available. In this conversation, we bring those two perspectives together.Listen to the conversationIf you’ve ever thought, “I can still do everything. I just don’t have anything left afterward,” this conversation will give you a different way to understand what may be happening. If midlife is changing how you work, think, and recover, you’re in the right place. Capability got you here. Capacity determines what you can sustain. You may still be getting it all done: the work, problem-solving, taking care of your family, and doing all the things that made you successful in the first place. What changes is the personal cost. You might first see it as the extra coffee, brain fog or fatigue start getting in the way, so you work later to compensate. You make it through the workday and discover that there is nothing left for dinner with your family, exercise, friends, travel, creativity, or simply enjoying the evening.Your capability can remain high while your available capacity declines. This is one of the patterns I see repeatedly in high-performing women in midlife. They are still capable of doing the job, so the growing cost of doing it can remain invisible for a long time. That is why I care so much about capacity.Performance tells you what you managed to accomplish. Capacity tells you what your system can continue to support. What Kevin sees from the leadership sideOne of the most useful ideas Kevin brought to this conversation is that leaders teach their organizations how to operate through the behavior they model. When a leader answers emails at midnight, the organization learns that midnight availability is acceptable. When a leader works through every vacation, people learn that time off may exist on the calendar without being fully protected. When a leader repeatedly rescues impossible deadlines by giving up weekends, the organization learns that the deadline can remain impossible because someone will absorb the cost. There is another consequence that can be harder to see. When a leader continually performs work that other people could learn to do, the organization can become dependent on that leader’s overextension. The leader becomes the person who always knows, always fixes, always steps in, and always finds a way to make the impossible happen.Kevin and I talked about what happens when that pattern continues for years.Your contribution can be extraordinary while the organization still needs to function without consuming you. That is where organizational sustainability and personal capacity meet. Then midlife changes the equationMany high-performing women have spent decades developing a way of operating that works. We work hard, recover when we can, push when necessary, and make up the difference later. Then the Perimenopause Operating System (POS) gets installed somewhere in our late thirties or forties, and it changes how we feel, how we function, and how we view our future potential. What we accomplish on the outside can look the same while the physiological cost can be much higher. That is where a woman who has spent her entire adult life being highly capable may suddenly wonder, “Why does everything take so much out of me now?”Sometimes we may conclude that we need a smaller life. I don’t think so. We need a bigger capacity.Symptoms are data. Patterns are information. This is one of the strongest places where Kevin’s organizational work and my metabolic work intersect.A business rarely has one isolated problem. A person rarely does either. You might be experiencing an afternoon energy crash, disrupted sleep, brain fog, cravings, irritability, and slower recovery at the same time. It is possible to chase each symptom individually, but the more useful information may be in the relationship between them. That is the lens I use in Executive Metabolism™. Every woman is unique and so much more than a set of symptoms and labs, or a dignosis. The same symptom can arise from different underlying patterns. Insomnia may involve nervous-system activation, nutrition, minerals, hormonal changes, or several factors working together. Brain fog can have more than one pathway behind it. An energy crash tells you something is happening, but it doesn’t tell you automatically why.The symptom tells you something is happening. The pattern tells you where to look. That is why individualized assessment matters. Take yours here. It’s free, takes 5 minutes, and results are instant. What happens when you finally stop?Kevin and I also talked about something many high-performing women recognize immediately: what happens at the end of a demanding day when there is simply nothing left. You stop working and collapse onto the couch. You watch Netflix or mindlessly scroll. You go to bed early because the thought of doing anything else feels like too much. Sometimes that is exactly the rest you need. There is also a meaningful difference between choosing rest and having no capacity left for anything else.I want women to have enough physiological capacity that their evenings belong to them again. Maybe you want to take a walk, play a game with your children, read a book, call a friend, cook dinner, have a conversation, go somewhere, or simply sit outside and enjoy the fact that you have nowhere else to be.When you have enough capacity, downtime becomes a choice.Capacity creates choice. What are you compensating for?Kevin brought up another useful parallel between organizational sustainability and individual physiology: compensation can become information.Organizations compensate for problems by throwing more people, more money, more hours, or more effort at them. Individuals compensate in familiar ways, too. More caffeine, more sugar, pushing through fatigue, sacrificing sleep, working late, or relying on willpower can all help you maintain performance for a while. The important question is: What are those strategies are telling you?The same applies to your calendar. If you keep adding responsibilities without deciding what comes off the plate, you are asking your existing capacity to absorb every new demand. At some point, something pays the bill: your sleep, your health, your relationships, or the Saturday you spent recovering from the week instead of living the life you were working so hard to create.Understanding the pattern gives you a place to start rebuilding what years of stress, external or metabolic, have taken from you. Where is your capacity being constrained? If you recognized yourself somewhere in this conversation, I would start with assessment rather than trying general wellness tips or the latest menopausal solution.Take the free 5-minute Executive Metabolic Drift Assessment. The Assessment looks across the Five Forces of Metabolic Capacity™ to identify your primary constraint and give you a starting point for understanding your metabolic pattern.I personally review the results, so you’re not simply entering information into an automated quiz and disappearing into a sequence. • Leadership That Lasts with Stacy Naugle & Kevin T. Taylor: The Capacity for the Long Game 04.09.2026 1h 3min
Executive coach and pastor Kevin T. Taylor joins Stacy for a live conversation about what it actually takes to lead well for decades, not just this quarter. They cover succession, burnout, and the biology of energy and recovery in midlife, and land on the same perspective from two very different fields: capability and capacity are not the same thing, and understanding that difference changes what recovery, delegation, and long-term performance actually require, especially for women over 40 navigating perimenopause, brain fog, and shifting energy. What you'll learn:Why an organization or a career can look successful right up until the person holding it together leaves, and what that reveals about the difference between capability and capacityThe specific behaviors, like answering email on vacation or staying reachable at all hours, that teach a team what's actually expected of them, whether a leader means to or notWhy Kevin considers "success without successors" a form of organizational failure, and what that means for anyone building something meant to outlast themA simple, phone-based way to track heart rate variability and recognize you're running on reserve before it becomes a crisisWhy "no is a holy word," and how to say no without guilt when you've built your identity on being the reliable oneWhat changes physiologically for women in midlife that makes recovery take longer even when effort and discipline haven't changedA concrete, low-cost example of how one organization normalized mental health support for its whole teamResources mentioned:Identify your metabolic capacity with the Metabolic Drift Assessment: https://www.executivemetabolism.com/assessmentStacy on Substack: https://metabolicintelligence.substack.com/Kevin T. • She Thought She Did Everything Right. The DATA Tells a Different Story. 30.06.2026 41min
Here is something you cannot get from your doctor, a wellness coach, a hormone optimization clinic, Google, or an AI search. It does not exist in any published research database, any peer-reviewed journal, or any existing menopause resource. What you are about to hear comes from a proprietary clinical dataset built specifically to measure what standard medicine has never been designed to capture in women like you. The findings explain, with clinical precision, why you can have perfectly normal labs, do everything your doctor recommended, and still be measurably below the physiological threshold your career and your life actually require. And they explain it in a way that no other voice in this space is currently positioned to offer, because no other instrument exists to produce this data.In this episode:•       What the first proprietary dataset measuring metabolic capacity in high-performing women over 40 actually found, including patterns that no existing research, lab panel, or hormone specialist has been positioned to identify in this population.•       Why 59% of these women were beginning their most cognitively demanding professional days without having restored the neurological resources those days require, and what is physiologically driving that specific pattern in women over 40.•       Why cellular energy production scored an average of 53.1% across the cohort, what that number means for every system built on top of it, and why applying more discipline and effort when this system is compromised accelerates the problem rather than resolving it.•       Why the most sobering finding in the entire dataset had nothing to do with physiology, and why it may carry more clinical weight than any of the numbers.•       Why sequence, not effort, determines whether any intervention produces lasting results, and how two women presenting with identical symptoms can require entirely different starting points. This data belongs to women like you. It was built from real assessments, completed by real high-performing women who arrived looking for an explanation that matched their lived experience. They found one. This episode is that explanation. The data in this episode will change how you understand what has been happening. I will see you there.NEXT STEPSTake the Free Metabolic Drift AssessmentIf you're wondering what your own symptoms may be trying to tell you, start here. The assessment takes about five minutes and helps identify which of the five systems governing energy, cognition, recovery, stress resilience, and metabolic stability may be creating the greatest drag on your current performance.https://www.executivemetabolism.com/assessmentMetabolic Capacity Analysis SessionAlready completed the assessment?A score is interesting. • Performance Mode vs. Protection Mode: The Clinical Framework Behind Every Midlife Energy, Recovery, and Focus Change 09.06.2026 17min
Your body is not failing you. It shifted its mode of operation. Most high-performing women in perimenopause are experiencing a measurable biological transition from Performance Mode into Protection Mode, a state where the body prioritizes resource conservation over peak output. The fatigue, the brain fog, the slower recovery, the habits that stopped working, all of it is logical biology responding to sustained demand during hormonal transition. In this episode, I explain exactly what drives that shift, why standard advice deepens it instead of reversing it, and how the 5 Forces of Metabolic Capacity framework identifies the specific starting point for recalibration in each woman’s system. You will leave this episode understanding that what you are experiencing has a name, a mechanism, and a solution, and that the solution starts with precision, not more effort.KEY TAKEAWAYS1. Protection Mode is not burnout and it is not aging. It is a specific biological state the body enters under sustained demand without adequate recovery. It is adaptive, reversible, and addressable with the right sequence.2. The estrogen connection. Declining estrogen affects three interconnected systems simultaneously: mitochondrial output, autonomic recovery capacity, and insulin precision for cognitive fuel. When all three shift at once, the experience of fatigue, brain fog, and slow recovery intensifies rapidly.3. Why common strategies stop working. High-intensity training in Protection Mode increases cortisol load. Caloric restriction signals scarcity and deepens conservation biology. Sleep optimization in isolation treats the consequence without addressing the driver. The issue is not effort. It is applying the right intervention to the wrong biological state.4. The 5 Forces of Metabolic Capacity. FIRE (mitochondrial output), FUEL (nutritional architecture), FOCUS (insulin precision and cognitive performance), FLOW (autonomic recovery), FREEDOM (stress-imprint patterns). Each Force interacts dynamically. The recalibration sequence matters more than any individual intervention.NEXT STEPSTake the free Metabolic Capacity Assessment: Five minutes. Immediate results. You know when you wake up and think "ugh" when you used to wake up excited to win your day? You did not change. But if you are a woman over 40, your physiology did. This episode explains exactly what shifted and what it takes to restore it.If you are still hitting your targets, still relied on by the people around you, and still delivering at a high level while privately noticing that everything costs more than it used to, this episode was written for you.In this episode you will hear:- Why normal labs and optimal performance are not the same thing, and what the gap between them is called. - The four specific systems that standard lab panels were never designed to measure, including mitochondrial efficiency, brain glucose delivery across a real workday, cortisol patterning over time, and the compounding cost of decades of sustained high performance. - The Five Forces of Metabolic Capacity framework and the five integrated biological systems that together determine whether your performance feels like your own. - What metabolic drift feels like from the inside when you are still outperforming everyone around you. - Why perimenopause is a leverage point for the next decade of your leadership rather than a risk to manage. The goal of this episode is not to add to your list of things to fix. It is to give you a precise clinical picture of what is actually happening, so the next step you take is the right one for your specific pattern.ResourcesTake the free Metabolic Capacity Assessment: Five minutes.
