The Rose Petal Murder: A New Trial On The Horizon? 30.07.2026 51minIn this episode, we revisit the Rose Petal Murder case with Troy Styles of Blunt Force Media to discuss significant new developments that could reshape the case. In February 2025, after brief deliberations, a Greenville County jury convicted Zachary Hughes of the October 2021 murder of Christina Parcell. Hughes was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case has now been remanded to the circuit court, where a judge will determine whether newly discovered evidence, following the victim's fiancé's recent guilty plea, warrants a new trial. Hughes' direct appeal has been placed on hold pending that decision. One of the issues raised on appeal is Hughes' claim that he was not permitted to present a complete defense at trial. Hughes has maintained that he killed Parcell to protect her minor daughter from what he believed was ongoing sexual abuse. This tragic narrative is not just about the crime itself but also about understanding the psychological and emotional landscape that leads to such an act. Alex Murdaugh Murder Convictions Overturned 14.05.2026 41minThe Supreme Court of South Carolina ruled that Alex Murdaugh is entitled to a new trial, citing improper influences on the jury. According to the court, Becky Hill's comments and actions compromised the integrity of the jury, violating Murdaugh’s right to a fair trial. The court emphasized that every defendant is entitled to an impartial jury, free from external influences. The court found that Hill made statements to jurors that suggested Murdaugh was guilty. While the court did not review every evidentiary issue raised by Murdaugh's appeal, it provided guidance on the admissibility of his financial crimes in the upcoming trial. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson expressed disappointment but acknowledged the necessity of a fair trial. Wilson stated that he intends to seek a speedy retrial, hoping to have it completed by the end of the year. Joining the podcast is Matt Siembieda, an attorney and law professor at Temple Law School.
