A four-month-long savage killing spree left, at least, 18 people dead. The man at the controls of the machine nicknamed the “Killdozer” was well known to the townspeople of Granby. Marvin Heemeyer was one of their neighbors, a local business owner who had a lot of friends but was also infamous for his well publicized disputes with the local town government. Few people had recognized the simmering anger under Heemeyer’s skin, that he’d apparently been holding onto for years, until finally he emerged with a suicidal plan to get revenge on anyone who he’d ever felt had wronged him. Many people, even his victims, were in awe at the sheer audacity of his attack, including the time, effort, and resources that went into building such an infernal machine in the first place. This was not our first brush with the bug, which is caused by the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus. It was by far the deadliest, with over 7 million deaths and counting, but it was just a strain of a pathogen that the world had been dealing with since around 2002. Much like you download the newest iOS on your phones, the SARS virus has been installing its own updates over the last two decades. The reason you may not have remembered them very well is most likely the passing of time, and the way the news cycles constantly refresh.
