  Lucifer Explained: The Origin and Meaning Behind this Fallen Angel 14.10.2026 10min

  Where does Lucifer, the fallen angel, REALLY come from? Aside from Paradise Lost by John Milton, or Fox’s TV series of the same name, the Bible is the best bet. Or so you’d think. This video explains the origins of this fallen angel. “Lucifer” is only mentioned once in the Bible, in Isaiah 14:12. But in the original Hebrew, the word “Lucifer” is absent. In its place, we have “helel ben shahar” which means “shining one, son of morning”, a Hebrew word for the morning star, the planet Venus. Uploaded 15-09-20Somehow the planet Venus became associated with the Devil, and that has much to do with the book of Enoch. A book that features a fallen angel who is kicked out of heaven. Over time, early Christians and Jews came to see Isaiah 14:12 as a veiled reference to a fallen angel. And so, Lucifer (the Latin word for morning star) was born, and became associated with Satan, the Devil, Beezebub and so on…I hope that I haven’t made this too convoluted or unapproachable. The story behind how Lucifer itself is pretty complex as it involves delving into ancient languages that can throw lots of people off. Including me!   Where does the Grim Reaper come from? Who is this skeletal incarnation of death really? In this video we’ll explore the origins of the Grim Reaper. A journey that takes us from ancient deities/archetypes of mortality all the way to history’s worst pandemic, the Black Death, the ghoulish environment from which the grim reaper (as we now know it) surfaced. Uploaded 30-08-20You may be surprised to know that the Grim Reaper isn’t actually mentioned in the Bible, and whilst there are descriptions of angels of death and apocalyptic horsemen that seem similar, it may be largely superficial. Let me know your thoughts though. Perhaps the Grim Reaper originally developed from figures from European folklore, especially the Ankou which comes from Celtic Mythology (Cornish and Breton to be exact). These figures synthesised with an increased number of images of death in medieval paintings post Black Death, in a movement known as the Danse Macabre. Also known as yokai, his monster prints have been plucked from Japanese folklore. Uploaded 04-02-22In his old age, Hokusai made a print series called One Hundred Ghost Stories. His five images have their own legend to accompany them. From the story of Oiwa, a possessed lantern who haunts her treacherous husband. Well, except for an adaptation of it known as Double Falsehood.
