  The center-left academic Robert Putnam is well known for his research on social cohesion, but his research led to a discovery that he suppressed for years. When Putnam finally came forward with his data, he revealed that diversity has negative impact across almost all domains of social cohesion. People in diverse societies trust the government less, have fewer friends, participate less in civic organizations, and spend more time at home watching television.   Over the last few decades, many industries discovered they could grow their customer base and profits by selling a cheaper, inferior version of their product while degrading the experience for everyone. Air travel and theme parks are obvious examples. Both learned that the advantages of scale could outweigh the obligation to deliver a high-quality experience. That philosophy did not remain in the realm of economics. It spread slowly but surely into American public life. The United States government increasingly treats the country the same way: expand the customer base, maximize throughput, then sell people a tiered version of the American experience as the baseline crumbles.   The Debt Crisis Is a Democracy Crisis | 9/17/26 17.09.2026 10min

  As Republicans head toward what looks like a perilous midterm election, affordability is on everyone’s lips. The Biden administration never convinced voters that it had brought food and housing costs under control. Some Republicans have tried to pretend the problem does not exist; others have acknowledged it without making meaningful progress. Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump made choices that worsened the pressure, from expanding federal spending to deepening costly foreign commitments. Neither party has a durable solution. The Congressional Budget Office projects a $1.9 trillion deficit for fiscal year 2026, and debt held by the public now tops 101% of GDP. Spending and inflation are not accidents at the edge of mass democracy. For most of the nation's history, the "Anglo-assimilation model" was considered the standard. Immigrants could come from all over Europe, but they were expected to conform to a predominantly British culture.   For decades, American hiring and admissions have been distorted by a legal and bureaucratic regime that promised equal treatment while repeatedly rewarding institutions for sorting people by race and sex. The Civil Rights Act itself does not exclude white men; Title VII protects employees from discrimination because of race and sex regardless of which race or sex they are. But affirmative action rules, consent decrees, diversity mandates, contracting preferences, and institutional risk management created powerful incentives to treat demographic categories differently. Incentives shape behavior. Universities, Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and nonprofits learned to fear discrimination claims, bad publicity, activist campaigns, and regulatory scrutiny. Long before “wokeness” became a corporate religion, lawyers and compliance departments were already teaching institutions to think in terms of protected groups, disparate impact, representation targets, and litigation exposure. Major figures issued the expected denunciations, yet plenty of ordinary progressives celebrated the violent death of a father and husband or mocked his memory online. Conservatives learned that some of their neighbors were perfectly willing to cheer the murder of a political opponent. Since then, trade wars, foreign wars, and the usual daily controversies have offered convenient distractions from a much darker realization: Something about American politics has changed.   British political commentator Melanie Phillips recently made a social media post claiming that the British are not allowed to have a national identity but Israelis are required to have one. The arguments stemmed from her belief that the British were not a real ethnic group with a right to a collective self-determination, while the Israelis do share a real ethnic bond, so their claims are valid. Unfortunately,  Phillips is far from alone in this belief, which has created a real barrier to robust nationalism.
