Idaho State Police later posted nearly 2,800 images in January 2026 and pulled them the same day. The Goncalves family said the images were live by the end of a 12-minute warning call. Senate Bill 1250 later exempted death-investigation photographs from public disclosure. Kohberger's parents and sisters then publicly supported his post-conviction challenge. His petition alleges former counsel pressured him into a false confession, misled him about prison conditions and failed to disclose evidence he believes supports innocence. His July 2, 2025 plea hearing says something very different. Kohberger told Judge Steven Hippler that no one threatened him, no one told him to lie, no one promised anything outside the agreement, and he was entering the plea freely and voluntarily. He also said he was guilty. The petition points to hair from Ethan Chapin's right hand. Defense expert Ruth Ballard had examined one hair from that location and described it as morphologically consistent with Chapin's own reference hair.
