  • The Danger of Herbal Fads 22.07.2026 34min
If you walk into a hip smoothie shop or health food store, you'll undoubtedly be flooded with the newest "superfoods" and cure-all herbs. Like so many things in our modern culture, herbal medicine also has its own "fads," as it seems as if there's almost a new one in style each season. Although it may seem harmless at first and they may be a good gateway into the realm of herbal medicine, herbal fads may not necessarily be a good thing. Most of the time, they're promoted by big supplement companies looking to inflate their bottom line, even if the truth is a bit fudged to get there (or even flat-out lies!). By learning about the danger of herbal fads, you can become a more conscious consumer and herbalist and know how to navigate this sometimes confusing territory. In today's blog post you'll learn: Who's behind herbal fads and how they're born in the market How herbal fads hurt the credibility of herbalism and pigeonhole herbs The ecological and cultural damage herbal fads can cause  Ways companies lie about herbs and how they can hurt you Why herbal fads can change the way you think about herbs without even realizing it     ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at:  http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com   Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/   Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ   Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/   ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. • A Journey Through the Water Element Signs and Herbs 01.07.2026 1u
All of life is born from water: from the mythological primordial ocean to the evolutionary-biology view that life originated in the waters, to the cosmological perspective of God separating the waters from heaven and Earth. Life is utterly dependent on water, but how do we work with the Water element in herbalism?   In this post, we're exploring the Water element in herbal medicine and how it manifests in people and plants. Here's what you'll learn: How the Water element manifests in traditional herbal medicine, medical astrology, and Ayurvedic healing systems The unique roles of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces as expressions of nourishment, purification, and spiritual connection within the Water element How the Water element influences key body systems, including the reproductive system, mucosal membranes, lymphatics, and organs of elimination The defining characteristics of Water element herbs, including their morphology, tastes, affinities, actions, and energetics How to identify Water element plants, and examples such as Marshmallow, Cleavers, Red Clover, White Pond Lily, and Horsetail ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at:  http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com   Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/   Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ   Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/   Shop our herbal products:  https://naturasophiaspagyrics.com/   ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. • Following the Herbal Harvest: An Interview with Ann Armbrecht 22.04.2026 1u 6min
What really goes into the herbal products we rely on every day? In this conversation, Sajah sits down with anthropologist, author, and founder of the Sustainable Herbs Initiative, Ann Armbrecht, to explore the hidden journey of herbs — from field to finished product — and the complex web of relationships, ethics, and decisions that shape their quality.  Sajah and Ann discuss the gap between traditional herbal values and modern industry realities, and what it means to practice integrity in herbal medicine today. This is an invitation to look more deeply — to "see double" — and to connect with the people, plants, and places behind the medicine. Here's what you'll learn in this interview: Why understanding the herbal supply chain matters for both quality and ethics The hidden realities of global sourcing, mechanization, and manufacturing What "seeing double" means—and how it changes your relationship to herbal medicine How working conditions and human care directly impact plant quality The role of certifications, transparency, and traceability (and their limitations) Why relationships—not just sourcing location—are the key to sustainability What the "laral value" of a plant is and how intention shows up in modern herbalism Practical ways to engage more consciously as an herbal consumer or practitioner ———————————— About Ann: Learn more about The Sustainable Herbs Initiative  Check out Ann Armbrecht's book, Following the Herbal Harvest: A Search for the Healing Promise of Plant Medicines at Chelsea Green Books (or find it wherever books are sold). • The Seasonal Allergy Strategy Part 1 08.04.2026 31min
Spring has officially sprung.   The birds are chirping, the plants are waking up, and the earth is on the move again. It's a beautiful time of year—and here in the Pacific Northwest, we welcome the lifting of the cold, the retreat of the rain, and the chance to head back outside to enjoy nature's splendor and get our gardens growing.   But spring's return comes at a high cost for many due to seasonal allergies.   If you're one of the millions of people who suffer from seasonal allergies, stepping outside can bring so much discomfort and suffering that it hardly seems worth it. You might choose to stay inside, avoiding the warm, sunny days simply because your allergies make being outside unbearable.   In this episode, we're diving into the dynamics of seasonal allergies. There's a lot to cover, so this will be a two-part series.   You may just be looking for remedies—and we'll get there—but first, we need some context. Understanding the "why" behind seasonal allergies provides a broader perspective on what's happening and how to identify the root cause.   In Part One, we'll explore the background and context of seasonal allergies, including: The contributing factors behind allergies and intolerance An esoteric perspective to complement physiological understanding The difference between allergies and intolerances What immunological load is—and how to remain asymptomatic   With this foundation in place, Part Two will cover the therapeutic strategy and approach. We are now into Aries season — our first sign of the yearly zodiac. In honor of the astrological new year, we're kicking off a quarterly Element series here on the Plant Path, which we'll do at the equinoxes — in Aries and Libra, and at the solstices — in the signs of Cancer and Capricorn. Today, in honor of Aries and the recent equinox, we'll discuss the first Element: Fire, the spark of life, which governs vitality, transformation, and the movement of energy through people and plants. We'll explore how Fire expresses itself through humans and through plants, offering a deeper lens for understanding constitution, physiology, and plant energetics. Here's what you'll learn: Why the Elements form the foundation of traditional medicine systems worldwide How the Fire Element emerges in alchemy, astrology, and herbalism The role of the Fire Element in human physiology, including the HPA axis, circulation, and vital force Key differences between the three Fire signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius How Fire moves through the body as a coordinated energetic system The core traits of Fire-type constitutions in people How to recognize Fire Element signatures in plants through morphology, taste, and energetics The primary actions of Fire herbs including stimulation, circulation, and immune activation How Fire herbs support (or balance) excess and deficiency patterns in the body Examples of classic Fire Element plants ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at:  http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com   Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/   Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ   Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/   Shop our herbal products:  https://naturasophiaspagyrics.com/   ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. • The Zodiacal Study Strategy 18.03.2026 46min
Have you ever felt overwhelmed trying to learn herbal medicine and astrology?    This is one of the biggest challenges I hear from people studying herbalism on its own… throw astrology on top of it, and it just seems like too much. They say, "I was already overwhelmed trying to learn how to become a great herbalist. And now, to practice this way, I have to learn the massive system of astrology too. I'm busy with my day job, family, home, and garden, and it's too much."   But it doesn't have to be that way! There is a strategic approach that allows you to study herbal medicine and astrology at the same time. The philosophical bases of both herbal medicine and astrology are, at their core, one and the same- for they are built off the same fundamental blueprint of nature.    When you study these fundamental principles and patterns of astrology and herbalism simultaneously, it enhances your learning of both systems, making it quicker to learn them and thus incorporate them into your work with people.    This is what I call the Zodiacal Study Strategy.   It is a model for study that you can incorporate into the time you have available—or rather the time you create—to optimize your learning process of both herbalism and astrology. It is built on the similarities between the philosophical foundations of holistic herbalism and astrology, or what I think of as the architecture of the zodiac. As with anything worth learning, you must make time to study, integrate, and practice. Unfortunately, it won't magically appear. What differentiates a good herbalist or astrologer from a great one is discipline and consistency in studying and gaining experience. And it's about using your time strategically. What follows is one year's worth of study. By the end of that year, you will have a solid foundation in both astrological medicine and clinical herbal medicine.   ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at:  http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com   Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/   Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ   Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/   ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. His mission is to develop a comprehensive approach that balances the science and spirituality of plant medicine, focusing on using plants to heal and rejuvenate the body, clarify the mind, open the heart, and support the development of the soul. This is only achieved through understanding and working with the chemical, energetic, and spiritual properties of the plants. His teachings embody a heartfelt respect, honor and reverence for the vast intelligence of plants in a way that empowers us to look deeper into the nature of our medicines and ourselves. He lives on a homestead in the foothills of Mt.
