  This week it's Aileen's turn to tell the 9:30 Society all about the fifth episode of the third season of Are You Afraid of the Dark: The Tale of the Dollmaker. This episode hits us with some AYAOTD classic tropes. You get a kid abandoned by their parents for a time, a complete lack of anything that you could call a dollmaker, and people being real weird about trauma. In this episode we find Melissa spending some time at her aunt and uncle's place. She's eager to hang out with their neighbor, a girl her own age but is shocked to learn that this friend of her vanished mysteriously and no trace of her was ever found. What's worse, her parents were so broken up about it that they packed up and moved away and no one will talk about the lingering horror of this disappearance. They just keep pushing it down. But because it's Are You Afraid of the Dark, Melissa keeps breaking into the empty neighbor house and discovers some really weird stuff going down in that attic. The girls, abandoned by their parents at summer camp will have to get over their differences if they intend to survive the curse of the woods when the not-so-nice girl falls into a trap set by three ghosts stuck in an endless forest presided over by a terrible spirit. In this one, Stacey (whose mom has got it going on) moves into an apartment down the hall from a mysterious room where it is revealed that an old woman lives. The two become friends but the truth of Mrs. Kegels is revealed when Stacey blows her off to go to a battle of the bands and it's up to Stacey to figure out how to chill out this angry ghost. Maybe it takes place in the 90s. Maybe it takes place in the 60s. Who can say? It's another tale of a young kid misunderstanding the entire situation and putting a potentially deadly plan into motion to reveal that the new neighbor in town is actually a werewolf. It's like The Tale of the Nightly Neighbors, only with werewolves this time. Is the new guy a werewolf? It's way more complicate than that and in the end it all turn out to be a metaphor for how there's all kinds of families out there and you just need to keep your mind open. There's a lot of spooky haunted house special effects, ice cream portals, and the tale of Danny Wetbutt, a kid from Bryan and Dave's childhood who was pretty cool about his terrible playground nickname. This episode, a fan favorite, introduces Melissa Joan Hart ahead of the premier of her own show for Nickelodeon, Clarissa Explains it all in a story about a babysitter sent to live with the child she watches and his two weird aunts in an old house in the middle of nowhere. When they get there her charge begins seeing the shimmering ghost of a little boy who died many years ago. All he can say to anyone is "I'm cold" and I'm sure that if you've seen this episode then you read it just now in that spooky little voice. Together, the two kids will solve the mystery of his death and solve the problem of the family finances in the process. In this story we find a young man who severely lacks in confidence, blaming the squeaky victorian-era leg brace he has to wear following a terrible car accident. A pretty girl at the library wants to go to the homecoming dance with him but he has his eye on an even prettier but very-much taken girl. Yes. Our leading man kind of sucks and is insufferable and to make matters worse he pays a visit to a certain very fancy, very flamboyant magic shop owner to buy a potion that promises to make him a charismatic dude with all the right moves but it comes at a cost. It's basically Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with a heavy dose of The Nutty Professor and a lot of sweaty incel energy. When he uses it to write a story, he finds that that story influences the dreams of the people he's writing about. This is a pretty cool trick until he figures out that these stories come true, no matter who's reading it and it's a race against time to snatch a short story school assignment before his teacher accidentally dooms his best friend Billy. If things weren't bad enough, Julie finds a tacky old necklace from the 60's which transports the wearer back in time to the 1960s where the ghost of a teenager killed in a lab accident is looking for someone, anyone, who can change the course of history so that she doesn't die at this horrible school.   It's Dave's turn to tell the 9:30 Society about the Are You Afraid of the Dark first season finale episode, The Tale of the Pinball Wizard, an episode about a teenage degenerate and his crippling addiction to pinball machines, or maybe it's a video game, we're honestly not sure and we're not confident that the show's writers know what a video game is, or pinball for that matter.  When Ross is too distracted by video games to notice that the shopping mall closed while he was busy playing games he finds himself the main character in a game where he has to, what else, save the princess. He'll face a bunch of weird obstacles on his way to victory. We have a real hard time staying focused on this one.
