And a huge thanks to our lovely Guest Selector Nathan Haines, who popped in mid-show with son Zoot, to give us a sneak preview ahead of Nathan's DJ Set & Presentation of 100% John Coltrane down at KEMURI HI-FI this coming Wednesday night as part of the Coltrane Centennial Festivities that are happening accross the world this week - marking the Jazz Giant's 100th birthday Celebrations. Nathan also played for us some of his dope new releases that were so EPICALLY smoking hot we almost had to call the fire department.!   Today Def Jim pays tribute to US Jazz Singer Cassandra Wilson, who passed away in the last week at the age of just 70, and will long be remembered for her utterly distinctive smoky contralto, unique phrasing and very personal treatment of both her own compositions and a wide range of songs from the entire canon of popular music. A half-dozen tracks from albums by other artists are also featured, including new or very recent releases by Adam O'Farrill, Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet and Tomeka Reid Quartet. Crucial listening folks.

  Miss Dom & Max had fun hosting their second show in the shiny new 95 BFM studio  - Max takes Jazz to the 'Outter Limits' - & goes the 'Avant-garde/Free Jazz ' route - &  has fun exploring a few darker selections with rock jazz links -  to the likes of Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, & also a track with a Fugazi connection, & another with a  Kiwi connection to the 1980's Tamaki group the 'Car Crash Set'  -  While Miss Dom dances around the studio with headphones on - & comes up with a suprisingly fresh 'rock jazz link' herself  - Ace! -  also - Dom keeps the focus on 'new releases'  - & amongst -  features a couple of Peachy, & very exciting -  new Soulful Aotearoa releases from Taylor Griffin & Romi Wrights. Ben McNicoll from 'Creative Jazz Club' also pops by mid-show to 'chat it up'  with Max  about the exciting upcoming  'special performance'  from visiting American Alto Saxophonist Patrick Bartley Jr.  - who lands & performs at the Tuning Fork on Sunday, August 23rd.   This week's 95bFM Jazz Show with Def Jim features six tracks by Free Jazz/Jazz-Funk/Blues guitarist James Blood Ulmer (or his bands) who died early last month at the age of 86, plus six more from a typically eclectic selection of other artists including Abdullah Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand) - who also passed recently - and a brand new release from Ambrose Akinmusire & Mary Halvorson. Many thanks to texter Deon who was able to answer the question of how Mr Ulmer acquired his epithet 'Blood', which apparently originated in his being affectionately dubbed 'Youngblood' by other musicians in his early playing days.
