  Friends of the Rosary,Today, September 21, we celebrate the Feast of St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist.As the author of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament, the apostle emphasizes Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises and tries to convince the Jews that their anticipated Messiah had come in the person of Jesus.Matthew was a publican, that is, a tax-collector for the Romans. His profession was hateful to the Jews because it reminded them of their subjection while robbing his own people and making a large personal profit.In addition, the Pharisees were seeing him as the typical sinner. Publicans were not allowed to trade, eat, or even pray with other Jews.One day, while seated at his table of books and money, Jesus looked at Matthew and said two words: "Follow me." That was all it took to make Matthew rise, leave his pieces of silver, and follow Christ.His original name, "Levi," in Hebrew signifies "Adhesion," while his new name in Christ, Matthew, means "Gift of God."The other outstanding mention of Matthew in the Gospels is the dinner party for Christ and His companions to which he invited his fellow tax-collectors.   Friends of the Rosary,Today, the Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we reflect on the parable of the landowner (Matthew 20:1-16a). Christ Jesus tells us that the kingdom of heaven is like this landowner. It's the parable of the workers in the vineyard, with those hired late receiving the same full wage.This can feel unfair until we realize the parable is not about human pay scales; it is about divine generosity. The Lord is generous in mercy and does not think as we do. His ways are higher than ours.Therefore, we are invited not to measure God’s mercy with human jealousy. God is not less good to us because He is generous to someone else.The invitation is to trust Him, seek Him now, and rejoice when grace reaches others too.Another important teaching of today's reading is how relentlessly Jesus himself goes out to find laborers. God takes the initiative in seeking us out. God chooses us despite our utter unworthiness. But since not every soul receives it the same way, the fruit depends on the soil of the heart.Some hearts are hard, some are shallow, some are crowded by worries and pleasures, and some are open, patient, and faithful.God is always sowing His word into our lives, but Faith grows when we listen, remove distractions, and persevere (even when growth feels slow)In 1 Corinthians 15:35-37, 42-49, Paul explains resurrection using the image of a seed. A seed is placed in the ground, and, in a sense, it “dies”; God can transform what looks small, buried, or broken into new life.He is saying that our earthly life is fragile, limited, and marked by weakness, but that God can raise it to glory.   Friends of the Rosary,Today in the Gospel (Luke 8:1-3), we see people — the Twelve and several women disciples — following Jesus with practical love, supporting His mission with what they had. These women had been healed, freed, and restored, and now they support Him by accompanying Him. Grace received becomes generosity offered.“Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another,preaching and proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God.Accompanying him were the Twelveand some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities,Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza,Susanna, and many otherswho provided for them out of their resources.”In the first reading (1 Corinthians 15:12-20), we see that Christ’s resurrection is the foundation of our hope and faith, but not a symbol, a nice idea, or a comforting belief. St. Paul is very direct: if Christ has not been raised, Christian faith collapses. Because Jesus rose, sin and death do not get the final word. That means our prayers, sacrifices, repentance, and love are not empty. "For John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine,
and you said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’
The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said,
‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard,
a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’
But wisdom is vindicated by all her children."But Jesus came as God to bring the light of divine presence and love into our fallen and dysfunctional world full of sin. He went to the poor, the disabled, the marginalized, the forgotten, those crippled by sin.As Bishop Barron explains, "He came to bring the ordo of God into a disordered world. He came as the keynote to tune up a cacophonous universe. And thus the proponents of disorder and the producers of the cacophony sought to destroy him.""The Church is the mystical body of Jesus, the living organism that makes present Christ’s mind and will in the world. It is his love made flesh throughout the ages, his hands and feet and eyes and heart. The Seven Dolors of Mary refers to the seven swords that pierced her Heart, as Simeon had foretold.The seven sorrows of Mary:The prophecy of Simeon, (Luke 2:25-35)The flight into Egypt, (Matthew 2:13-15)Loss of the Child Jesus for three days, (Luke 2:41-50)Mary meets Jesus on his way to Calvary, (Luke 23:27-31; John 19:17)Crucifixion and Death of Jesus, (John 19:25-30)The body of Jesus being taken from the Cross (deposition from the Cross), (Psalm 130; Luke 23:50-54; John 19:31-37)The burial of Jesus, (Isaiah 53:8; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42; Mark 15:40-47)Mary stands with Jesus in sorrow, and she teaches us how to remain faithful when love is painful. The Church is one Body, and suffering borne with Christ can become communion rather than isolation.Our Lady of Sorrows is the patroness of people named Dolores, Dolais, Deloris, Dolorita, Maria Dolorosa, Pia, and Pieta.In Italy, the title of Our Lady of Sorrows is Maria Santissima Addolorata. She is the patron of many Italian cities. Observed in Rome in the seventh century, this feast commemorates the recovery of the Holy Cross, which St. Helena had placed on Mount Calvary.Our Mother Church sings of the triumph of the Cross, the instrument of our redemption. To follow Christ, we must take up His cross, follow Him, and become obedient until death, even if it means death on the cross.We identify with Christ on the Cross and become co-redeemers, sharing in His cross.When Moses lifted up the bronze serpent over the people (as we read today), it foreshadowed salvation through Jesus, who was lifted up on the Cross.When we make the Sign of the Cross, we give our entire selves to God — mind, soul, heart, body, will, thoughts.   Friends of the Rosary,In today’s Sunday Gospel, from St. Matthew 18:21-35, we hear the story of the merciless servant, whom we all might judge as a mean, heartless man.But we'd better stop and think for a moment that we ourselves may be that merciless servant described in the parable.Every time we sin, we incur a debt to God’s loving, infinite mercy. Then can it happen that we can be so heartless and foolish as to refuse to forgive a neighbor for some offense he has committed against us?Will it be the fate of all unforgiving Christians a deserved punishment of the merciless?That day has not yet come for us. And we still have time to put our affairs in order.We can still forgive all our enemies from our hearts. If we do not, we are cutting ourselves off from the possibility of having our own sins and offenses forgiven by God. We might then have the word of our divine Lord, as we read in today's parable: "So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”Also, September 13 marks the fifth apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, which occurred in 1917 at Cova da Iria in Fatima, Portugal.An immense crowd of around 30,000 to 40,000 pilgrims accompanied the three shepherd children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—to the site, hoping for a glimpse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.Around noon, after a flash of light, the children saw Mary appear above the Holm oak tree. Our Lady told the children to continue praying the Rosary daily to bring an end to World War I. The Hebrew name of Mary, Miryãm (in Latin, Domina), means lady or sovereign.We call Mary our Lady as we call Jesus our Lord, and when we pronounce her name, we affirm her power, implore her aid, and place ourselves under her protection.The feast of the Holy Name of Mary therefore follows that of her Birthday, as the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus follows Christmas.In accordance with Jewish custom, our Lady's parents named her eight days after her birth and were inspired to call her Mary. Mary invites us to call upon her name frequently and persistently, for she delights to hear and answer our prayers. To say her name is to express a word of hope. And this word of hope proclaims our salvation, for Mary was created to be the Mother of our Savior. Saint Bernard wrote,"Look to the star of the sea, call upon Mary in danger, in distress, in doubt, think of Mary, call upon Mary. May her name never be far from your lips, or far from your heart … If you follow her, you will not stray; if you pray to her, you will not despair; if you turn your thoughts to her, you will not err.   Friends of the Rosary,Nearly 3,000 souls perished on September 11, 2001, in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, including 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel, followed by thousands more responders whose later illnesses stemmed from their selfless recovery efforts at Ground Zero.Today, 25 years after those horrific terrorist attacks, we honor those we lost and the legendary courage of our first responders — we must never forget."Twenty-five years later, its memory lives on; in a new skyline, in simple plaques and great memorials, and in the photographs of first responders who were lost, still displayed outside of firehouses and police stations," Archbishop Ronald Hicks of New York said in a statement. "We also remember those who died and the extraordinary courage, service, sacrifice, and compassion that followed," Hicks said.This week, bishops across the country issued remarks, reflections, and prayers for the United States and the lives lost on September 11, 2001.Daily Masses will remember those who died as a result of the tragedy and mourn with their loved ones.We are all invited to join in prayer for the victims taken from us in acts of violence 25 years ago at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in rural Pennsylvania. And we lovingly embrace in prayer the victims’ families and friends, who still mourn the irretrievable loss of their loved ones in that tragedy.Amid the sorrow over the attacks, our faith is lifting us up and sustaining us, as many are turning to God in prayer with renewed intensity and a sense of unity.As conflicts intensify around the world, let us renew our commitment to be Christ’s instruments of peace in an increasingly fractured and divided world.In the midst of tragedy, God gives us opportunities to become instruments of His love.   Friends of the Rosary,Today, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Peter Claver (1581-1654), who dedicated himself to the service of black slaves. For thirty-three years, he ministered to slaves, caring for the sick and dying and instructing them through catechists. Through his efforts, 300,000 souls entered the Church. He is the Patron of the African Missions, proclaimed in 1896 by Pope Leo XIII.Born of a distinguished family in Catalonia, Spain. He became a Jesuit in 1604 and left for Colombia in 1610. At that time, Cartagena was the principal slave market for the New World. Thousands of blacks were brought there, herded into warehouses, and auctioned to the highest bidder. Captured in Africa, these slaves were chained in groups. Their treatment was so inhumane that 1/3 of the slaves died on the sea journey.It was to these people that Peter would minister. He would meet each slave ship as it arrived. Peter would go to the warehouses and bring them food, water, medicine, and clothing, for, as he said, "We must speak to them with our hands, before we try to speak to them with our lips." But most of all, he brought them, God. While nursing them back to health, he would teach them of Christ, explain to them that they were loved by God more than they were abused by man, and that evil outraged God. He offered their only consolation: hope in God's promises. Nearly three hundred thousand of them received baptism at his hands.After twenty-seven years of devotion to the black slaves, St. Peter Claver died in Cartagena on September 8, 1654. Leo XIII canonized him on January 15, 1888, proclaiming him special patron and protector of the negroes. All three were born without original sin, although Mary and Jesus were conceived without sin, and St. John was cleansed of original sin while in the womb at the Visitation.Mary was "of the lineage of Abraham, born of the tribe of Judah and of the progeny of King David, from whom the Son of God was born, made man by the work of the Holy Spirit, to free humanity from the ancient bondage of sin," the Roman Martyrology states.Mary, the spiritual mother of all men, was born to be the mother of the Savior of the world and the holiest of God's creatures.Because of her Son's infinite merits, she was conceived and born immaculate and full of grace.Through her, Queen of heaven and of earth, all grace is given to men, and by the will of God, we receive the gift of faith to grow in likeness of their Head, Christ the Lord.Let us often call upon the Blessed Virgin as "Cause of our joy", one of the most beautiful titles in her litany. His answer, in typical Jewish style, came with another question:“Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?”This image of the wedding feast appears frequently in the New Testament, most notably in the Cana wedding narrative.Jesus is the wedding of heaven and earth, the marriage of divinity and humanity. Christ is the bridegroom, and the Church is the bride.
