Every year in Miami since 2015, Florida International University—and its Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy—has convened heads of state, cabinet ministers, ambassadors, and government and military leaders from all over the world, plus private-sector experts, to take part in a leading forum designed to address security issues. Host Adrienne Ross explores the big topics and discussions that emanate from FIU’s 11th Annual Hemispheric Security Conference.

    As the event in Miami and this season come to a close, what top lessons should we take from this community of influential leaders, and what can listeners do to shape the future of the Western Hemisphere? In this episode, Adrienne Ross takes us directly to the main stage at Florida International University’s Hemispheric Security Conference to look at how diplomacy and business align throughout the hemisphere and what policies are succeeding. Together, with a collection of different voices, she speaks with U.S. Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS) Leandro Rizzuto Jr., and then she dips into a panel discussing migration, moderated by FIU’s Inga Trauthig and featuring Gil Guerra, a senior policy analyst at the U.S.-based Niskanen Center; Betilde Muñoz-Pogossian, a senior advisor to the secretary-general of the OAS; and Adam Isacson, the director of defense oversight at the Washington Office on Latin America. Then Adrienne explores the legacy of the conference and what comes next with Mario Montoto, the president of the conference’s co-host, the Argentine TAEDA Foundation. Plus, Shlomi Dinar, the dean of FIU’s Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, shares how the lessons gained in Miami inspire and equip our next generation of leaders. She has written more than 80 publications and is currently a research professor at the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy at Florida International University (FIU). This is one of the many topics set to be discussed at FIU’s 11th Annual Hemispheric Security Conference, which begins this week in Miami.

In this conversation, host Adrienne Ross discusses the pivot toward centering U.S. focus on the Americas. Her two guests include Brian Fonseca⁠, vice provost for defense and national security research and director of the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy at Florida International University. He is also the founding executive director of cybersecurity at FIU. And also joining her is Carlos Díaz-Rosillo⁠, founding director of the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom. During the first Trump administration, Díaz-Rosillo held a variety of high-level positions, including acting principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. The three tackle a number of topics that will be discussed at ⁠FIU’s 11th Annual Hemispheric Security Conference⁠ in May, including the modern-day application of the Monroe Doctrine, Venezuela’s future, and the Shield of the Americas coalition.
