REPLAY #4: Common Sense ‘Resurrection’ vs Method Man ‘Tical’ (1994) 18.08.2026 32хвWelcome to Hip Hop World Cup REPLAY – your chance to revisit classic matches between golden-age rap albums from the Hip Hop World Cup vault! In 1994, the USA hosted the FIFA World Cup, the most memorable part of which was during the opening ceremony when Diana Ross shanked a penalty wide that inexplicably still made the goal split in half.Even more memorably, 1994 saw a huge number of incredible hip-hop albums hit the streets, with the likes of Nas, Biggie, Jeru, O.C. and Gang Starr dropping jewels that would change the landscape of hip-hop forever. In this Replay episode, we’re revisiting a match between two more classics from this seminal year – Resurrection by Common (Sense) and Tical by Method Man.When these two albums faced each other in our 1994 episode, the crowd erupted and so did our hosts (not literally) – Resurrection is one of Danny and James’ all-time favourites, while Steve is a serious Wu-Tang stan who holds Tical in very high regard. What happened next? Who won? Were anyone’s opinions as wide of the mark as Diana’s shite penalty? Listen to this Replay episode and find out.WEBSITE: https://hiphopworldcup.podview.comJOIN OUR PATREON!Sign up to our Champions Tier on Patreon and access exclusive bonus content:https://www.patreon.com/cw/HipHopWorldCupALL PREVIOUS EPISODES AVAILABLE NOW ON YOUR PODCAST APP OF CHOICE:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hip-hop-world-cup/id1589610632Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6aBAonIjzVh1zr27q733yKPlease rate and review Hip-Hop World Cup on Apple, Spotify or your podcast app of choice, which will help raise our visibility and give the podcast ‘mass appeal’.SOCIAL MEDIA:Follow and holler at us on social media to share your thoughts on the episode or talk 90s hip-hop in general:Instagram, X, Threads and Bluesky: @hiphopworldcupBeats and stings by Danny Phillips: https://soundcloud.com/dannyphillips1978 -
REPLAY #3: A Tribe Called Quest ‘The Low End Theory’ vs NWA ‘Efil4zaggin’ (1991) 11.08.2026 27хвWelcome to Hip Hop World Cup REPLAY – your chance to revisit classic matches between golden-age rap albums from the Hip Hop World Cup vault! In this episode we take a trip back to 1991 (an incredible yet strangely overlooked year in hip-hop history) for a battle between two of the greatest hip-hop groups ever: A Tribe Called Quest and NWA. When these sophomore albums faced each other in our 1991 tournament, it was an agonising decision for our hosts. Tribe’s The Low End Theory is regarded as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time, marrying jazz-infused beats with next-level lyricism from Q-Tip and Phife. Meanwhile, NWA’s Efil4zaggin marked an evolutionary leap forward in hip-hop production courtesy of Dr Dre and Yella, its rich, musical, multi-layered beats providing the perfect backdrop for Dre, Ren and Eazy-E’s lurid gangsta tales. Though not as revered as its predecessor Straight Outta Compton, this is a provocative, exhilarating listen that laid the blueprint for Dre’s solo debut The Chronic, released a year later.Listen up to find out which album wins! SHOOTOUT 11: DJ Quik 28.07.2026 1год 28хвAfter the England football team ignominiously crashed out of the 2026 World Cup at the hands of Argentina, Danny and Larry were summoned at short notice by the FA and the Prime Minister to carry out an emergency hip-hop podcast to lift the mood of the nation. So with heavy hearts and an overwhelming sense of responsibility we stepped into the breach with one simple instruction from the FA – discover the very best DJ Quik production.Few producers have shaped the sound of West Coast hip hop like DJ Quik. Emerging from Compton in the early 1990s, Quik built a reputation as a gifted rapper, producer and engineer, blending G-funk with live instrumentation, funk, soul and jazz into a rich, unmistakable sound. Beyond his own acclaimed albums, his production work has influenced generations of artists across hip hop and R&B, cementing his reputation as one of the genre's greatest musical minds. In this special tournament episode, we dive deep into Quik's catalogue as 16 of his finest productions battle for the trophy. Drawn from the hat and pitted against each other in a series of one-on-one ties, they fight their way through the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals before one track is crowned champion. There’s no Steve for this one, but as ever we're joined by our celebrity VAR panel to scrutinise our hottest takes and make sure every decision is Safe + Sound. EXTRA TIME #3: Daz & Warren G 14.07.2026 25хвAt the climax of our VERSUS SHOOTOUT between Daz Dillinger and Warren G, the referee added a whopping 25 minutes of extra time after two hydration breaks and a nasty moment when Nate Dogg made some bodies turn cold. So, never ones to short-change their loyal listeners, Danny, Larry and Steve pull up their socks, slather lashings of Deep Heat onto the vital areas and lumber back over the touchline to fill that 25 minutes with more robust hip-hop discourse. And what a 25 minutes it is. We dive deeper into the discographies of these two Long Beach legends in Winner Stays On, tackle big philosophical dilemmas in What’s The Scenario and probe Larry and Steve’s minds with a series of fiendish questions in That’s The Real Quiz. SHOOTOUT 10: Daz vs Warren G 30.06.2026 1год 25хвIn this episode, we’re at the SoFi Stadium in LA to witness a Long Beach G-Funk SHOOTOUT between rapper/producers DAZ DILLINGER and WARREN G.With the 2026 World Cup in full swing, what better what to celebrate than a good old-fashioned hip-hop penalty shootout between two West Coast legends? On one side is Tha Dogg Pound general, Death Row producer and architect behind some of the hardest West Coast classics. On the other is the smooth-talking Regulator whose laid-back flow, melodic production and Nate Dogg-assisted anthems helped take G-funk global. From Dogg Food to Regulate… G Funk Era and beyond, we’re putting catalogues, impact, verses, beats and legacy under the spotlight. We’ve picked five tracks from each artist, which are drawn against each other at random and we use the three-main vote to decide who wins each tie. Like the real World Cup, this podcast has three hosts – Danny, Larry and Steve – who keep the matches moving with insightful, incisive commentary, backed by some of the biggest names in British football. SHOOTOUT 9: Q-Tip 09.06.2026 1год 43хвIn an episode that critics are already calling ‘a podcast’, we celebrate the mercurial mind of A Tribe Called Quest frontman Q-TIP. He’s worn many hats over his long and prosperous career – rapper, producer, actor, innovator – and today he’s regarded as one of the most important figures in hip-hop culture. His beatmaking brilliance helped define the jazz-infused boom-bap sound that dominated the mid-90s. Along the way he earned a place behind the boards for a series of rap masterpieces including Nas' 'One Love', Mobb Deep's 'The Infamous' LP and of course ‘Gangsta Bitch’ by Apache. The only appropriate way to pay tribute to this hip-hop heavyweight is to convene some of the finest minds in British rap podcasting. Sadly none were available, so Danny, James and Steve step into the breach, conducting a sensational SOLO SHOOTOUT where ten Q-Tip tracks and productions compete to take home the trophy. We draw two tracks at random to face each other, subject each song to some premier-league punditry, then decide on the winner using the FIFA-mandated three-man vote system. Those five winners progress to the final, where our patented TruSkore™ system determines the ultimate champion.Evaluating Q-Tip’s work is not a responsibility we’ve taken lightly – in fact we had to draft in some of the most respected figures in British football to give it the gravitas it deserves. We’re even monitored by VAR for heaven’s sake, just to make sure our opinions are free from clear and obvious errors. So can you kick it? REPLAY #2: Smif-N-Wessun ‘Dah Shinin’’ vs DJ Quik ‘Safe + Sound’ (1995) 26.05.2026 24хвWelcome to Hip Hop World Cup REPLAY – your chance to revisit classic matches between golden-age rap albums from the Hip Hop World Cup vault! We go back to 1995 for this East v West coast clash as Brooklyn’s Smif-N-Wessun take on Compton’s own DJ Quik! The gritty, grimy Beatminerz production on Smif-N-Wessun’s iconic LP Dah Shinin’ is a world away from the polished funk beats of DJ Quik’s third album Safe + Sound, but that contrast made for an irresistible clash that Danny, James and Steve got their rap-loving teeth into.Enjoy this trip down memory lane as we chew over two of 1995’s best hip-hop albums. REPLAY #1: Ghostface Killah ‘Ironman’ vs Jay-Z ‘Reasonable Doubt’ (1996) 12.05.2026 18хвWelcome to Hip Hop World Cup REPLAY – your chance to revisit classic matches between golden-age rap albums from the Hip Hop World Cup vault! We kick things off with a Big Apple bust-up between two albums celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2026. When Ghostface Killah’s Ironman came out of the hat against Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt it was a bit like Man City drawing Man United in the FA Cup – a real battle of the big guns. Danny, James and Steve revisit these two iconic debuts, celebrating the raw street reportage and razor-sharp lyricism that made both albums instant classics – before inevitably tying themselves in knots trying to pick a winner using the three-man vote.If this sparks memories or arguments, all the full episodes from the first series are available on your podcast player of choice. EXTRA TIME #1: The DITC Tournament 27.04.2026 1год 2хвWelcome to Hip Hop World Cup EXTRA TIME, our post-match podcast where we head back onto the pitch for more hip-hop discussion related to our main episodes. After the final whistle blew on our Shootout between revered rapper/producers LORD FINESSE and DIAMOND D, we wanted to dig deeper into the D.I.T.C. crates. So we sucked some orange slices, laced up the Predators and kicked off an ambitious 16-album tournament (or ‘bracket’ for our American listeners) to find the best LP from this legendary hip-hop stable. For this new contest – which we've dubbed Mama Said Knock You Out – the 16 albums are split into two groups of eight and drawn against each other in one-on-one matches using FIFA’s fixture super computer. Danny and Steve take it in turns to choose the winner on gut instinct alone, with albums progressing through the rounds to the final. SHOOTOUT 8: Lord Finesse vs Diamond D 25.03.2026 1год 24хвIn this episode we take golden-age hip-hop deep into the bowels of British government as we carry out a historic VERSUS SHOOTOUT in front of a packed House of Lords. The reason for this flimsy comedic conceit? Well, we needed a group of honest, principled pillars of society to help us legislate a sensational showdown between two noblemen of ‘90s hip-hop: LORD FINESSE and DIAMOND D.Emboldened by the lords’ deep knowledge of hip-hop politics, Danny, James and Steve scrutinise the work of these two rapper-producers from the Diggin’ In The Crates crew, tackling topics like their mastery of the SP1200 sampler, their punchline-laden lyrics and their impact on hip-hop as a whole. Five tracks from each artist are drawn against each other at random, and following a feisty debate our hosts use the three-man vote to elect a winner. It’s a best of five, first-past-the-post punch-up that sees one of these rap pioneers seize the seat of power. Who will it be? SHOOTOUT 7: DJ Premier 24.02.2026 1год 27хвIt’s the big one! In this SOLO SHOOTOUT, we’re shining the spotlight on arguably hip-hop’s greatest-ever producer as ten DJ Premier tracks fight for sonic supremacy. From his early days with Gang Starr to era-defining work with Nas, Jeru, Biggie and a roll call of elite MCs, DJ Premier has stood at the forefront of hip-hop for more than three decades with his unmistakable boom-bap sound, becoming one of the most trusted producers of the 1990s golden era. His ear for sampling helped define the sound of New York rap at its grittiest and most refined. Built on chopped samples, hard-hitting drums and razor-sharp scratch hooks, his sound is both stripped-back and cinematic – minimal in palette yet immense in impact. In this episode, Danny, James and Steve choose ten of Preemo’s best bangers, draw them against each other and decide who wins each tie. At the end we tot up the TruSkore totals of the five winners and crown our overall Shootout champion. Simples!Along the way we serve up the usual smorgasbord of shite, including an over-elaborate quiz, ruminations on sample snitching, which ‘Crooklyn’ track is better and Group Home’s compellingly poor rap skills. SHOOTOUT 6: KRS-One 20.01.2026 1год 15хвTeacher. Philosopher. Activist. Hip-hop legend. But that’s enough about Steve, because in this episode we’re diving elbow-deep into KRS-One’s back catalogue for another stunning Shootout.KRS-One is hip-hop’s president elect, real rap royalty, and we wanted to celebrate his legacy with a dedicated Solo episode. We discuss his troubled early years, the formation of Boogie Down Productions with Scott La Rock (RIP), his mid-90s boom-bap resurgence and whether or not he really did know a crack dealer by the name of Peter. In this episode, ten killer KRS cuts have been excavated, dusted down and lovingly curated by Danny, James and Steve – then unceremoniously hurled into the bearpit to battle it out for hip-hop podcasting’s top trophy. We draw tracks at random to face each other, debate their pros and cons and vote on the winner. SHOOTOUT 5: Nas vs Jay-Z 25.11.2025 1год 20хвIn this episode we get into a New York state of mind as two titans of the rap game go toe-to-toe: NAS and JAY-Z.In the world of hip-hop, artists don’t much get bigger or better. These MCs have been redefining rap music since the mid-90s, achieving global superstardom along the way. Their seminal debut LPs Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt earned them a place on rap’s Mount Rushmore, but a deluge of dope verses and iconic albums in later years further cemented their place in hip-hop history. In our latest SHOOTOUT, we reignite the pair’s legendary beef by drawing their tracks against each other in a brutal best-of-five penalty shootout. We discuss the songs and use the three-man vote to decide who buries it in the bottom corner and who puts it in row Z.All this, plus the usual guff including red-hot takes on Illmatic’s worst track, some Kanye West chat and silent analysis from the brightest brains in British football.Join us as we decide once and for all who’s the king of New York. BONUS PLAY OFF! NWA vs Ice Cube 27.03.2025 1год 3хвFIFA asked us to convene an emergency Play Off podcast to settle one of the biggest debates in hip-hop history – which is better, Kill at Will by Ice Cube or 100 Miles and Runnin’ by NWA? Both released in 1990 after the acrimonious split of NWA – dubbed “the world’s most dangerous group” by Shakin’ Stevens – these EPs marked a pivotal moment in the history of rap music. After watching Ice Cube drop his solo masterpiece Amerikkka’s Most Wanted, Dre, Ren, Eazy and Yella hit back with 100 Miles and Runnin’ – an electrifying EP that brims with vitriol towards Cube and portrays him as a traitor. Meanwhile Cube quietly capitalised on his growing solo success with Kill at Will, an EP that largely avoided dissing his former bandmates, keeping it bottled up until the vicious No Vaseline on his 1991 album Death Certificate. Thirty-five years after these EPs were released, Danny, James and Steve referee this brutal battle from a secret underground bunker under strict ‘papal election’ conditions, with VAR and TruSkore technology as a reassuring presence throughout. After discussing each track, they use the three-man vote to decide which EP takes home the trophy – all overseen by the usual rogue’s gallery of British football legends. Don’t miss it! DREAM TEAM 6: 1995 feat Big L, Dr Dre, GZA, Mobb Deep, DJ Quik and more! 24.02.2025 1год 59хвIn our final Dream Team episode of the series, we bring you a special show recorded in front of a live audience at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. Admittedly, the audience was there to watch BBC’s Question Time being filmed and they seemed confused – occasionally angry – but we soon won them round with our lively debate over the top hip-hop tracks from 1995. And what a year it was. On the east coast, the Wu-Tang boys spoiled us with classic albums from GZA, Raekwon and ODB, which cemented RZA as the dominant force in hip-hop – challenged only by DJ Premier, whose brand of quirky head-nodders made him the go-to guy for the best beats in the business. Meanwhile Dr Dre kept our heads ringin’, Masta Ace gave us da answer and Show & AG took us to the next level. Throw in lesser-known bangers from the likes of Shabazz The Disciple, Mic Geronimo and Double XX Posse and it’s easy to see why some consider 1995 to be the low-key greatest year of hip-hop's golden era. To celebrate the 30-year anniversary of these songs, Danny, James and Steve attempt to knock a squad of 22 down to 11 by drawing them against each other in a series of one-on-one matches and using the three-man vote to decide the winner each time. The 11 winning tracks earn a place on our Spotify playlist, the losers get an early bath. We also decide on the team's name, manager and star player.
