Can a Haircut Cut Off Bad Luck? 27.10.2026 11mThere are so many tips online about how to turn your luck around. Since I love trying new things, I decided to try getting a haircut to see if it would help. But, one try isn’t enough to call it a successful experiment! Looking back, I’ve tried this haircut trick about ten times. I even checked the lunar calendar and picked a lucky day and time to get my hair done! And guess what? About six or seven times, I really did feel better after getting a haircut. Don’t ask me why. I have no idea! Things that felt stuck seemed to get better, and I felt more energetic, too. Plus, after getting my hair cut and washed, or even permed or dyed, I don’t have to wash and dry my own hair when I get home that day. I get to give my hands a day off! Honestly, that alone makes me happy. So, if things haven’t been going your way lately, why not do something small that makes you feel good? You could clean your room, try a new hairstyle, or go out for a walk. It’s totally up to you whether you want to get a haircut! After all, there’s no guarantee that you’ll have better luck. But one thing is for sure: once your hair is cut, it’s shorter, and you can’t just stick it back on! But what if you don’t want to cut your hair short and still want to try this luck-changing trick? I think just getting the ends trimmed is a great idea, too! I’m one of those grown-ups who would cry if their long hair got cut too short. Yes, I’m a beginner at adulting, and I’m not very good at it! -- 練習 I need a haircut.(我需要剪頭髮) I'd like a haircut. 20.10.2026 9mHey, can you wish me a happy birthday in advance? Besides cake, parties, and blowing out candles, I recently came across a German tradition that made me think, “Man, it’s tough being a German guy!” In some parts of Germany, there is a tradition called** Treppenfegen**, which means “sweeping the stairs.” If a man turns 30 and is still unmarried, his friends might take him to a public place. They scatter bottle caps, bits of paper, and other trash on the steps, then make the birthday guy sweep it all up with a broom. And you know what the worst part is? Just when you think you’re done, your friends might start throwing trash everywhere again! You sweep, they throw trash. You sweep again, and they do it all over again. This isn’t a birthday party. It’s an endless cleaning job! So, how can you finally get out of this mess? According to tradition, the birthday guy has to get a kiss to end the prank. This tradition is found in some parts of Germany, but not everywhere. These days, it is often just a birthday joke among friends. After hearing this story, I suddenly feel that a simple birthday is much better! To me, a surprise is just as scary as a scare! You don’t need to get me a broom, and please don’t plan any surprises! Just saying “Happy birthday!” would make me happy! Finally, I hope everyone celebrating a birthday gets to celebrate in their own way. After all, it’s your birthday. The most important thing is to celebrate in a way that makes you happy! As for the broom… let’s leave it to people who actually need to clean! 練習 sweep the floor 掃地 Could you please sweep the floor?(可以請你掃一下地板嗎?)

Stop Overthinking and Let It Go|陳雷〈歡喜就好〉 13.10.2026 14mHave you ever noticed how strange we are these days? Many things have not even happened yet, but we are already worried about them. There was a time when I was feeling really down, and one day, I came across a video on Instagram of Qiaohu dancing to Chen Lei’s song, Be Happy and Let It Go. The funny thing is, this song does not try to teach us some big lesson about life. It simply tells us one thing. Why do we have to worry about everything so much? Just be happy. So today, I want to talk about this song. Life is full of ups and downs. Do we really need to understand everything? Sometimes we stay clear-headed; sometimes we just go with the flow. Some people will say you’re good, and some people will say you’re not. If we don’t overthink so much, life can be a lot easier. All day long, we complain that our car isn’t big enough, and our house isn’t big enough. We complain that the food doesn’t taste good, and that our wife isn’t pretty enough. When we drive a nice car, we’re afraid someone will steal it; when we have a big house, it’s a pain to clean. When we eat too well, we’re afraid our blood pressure will go up; when our wife is too beautiful, we’re afraid she’ll run off with someone else. Life is short, almost like we’re just here for a little while. Sometimes we worry; sometimes we just take it easy. You might ask me, “So what’s your secret?” Honestly, there’s no secret. Just be happy and let it go. So, the answer this song gives me is actually very simple. There is no secret. There is no secret trick that successful people use by waking up at four in the morning. It is simply this… Just be happy. Someone doesn’t like you? Okay. Okay。 Your plan didn’t work out? Try again. Are you having a bad day? Then take a break. Do you really feel like going crazy? Then go crazy for a while. I even think we might need a “Go Crazy Day.” There are 365 days in a year, so maybe we can choose a few days to stop trying to improve ourselves, stop judging ourselves, and stop overthinking everything. Life will never be perfect, and we will never understand everything. There are things we can work hard to change, and there are things we just have to let go. Maybe what we really need to learn is not how to make our lives perfect, but how to stop turning every little thing into a reason to overthink and stress ourselves out. You have already sung the song, so do you get it now? -- 練習 Don't overthink it. Just take it easy. It is what it is.

Ants Sleep Hundreds of Times a Day. 06.10.2026 13mWhen we see ants, they always seem to be busy. They look for food, carry things, take care of young ants, and move around all day. So, you might think, “Do ants even need to sleep?” Well, they do. And the way some ants sleep might make you a little jealous. Because they can sleep hundreds of times a day. They do not sleep for eight hours in one long stretch. Instead, they take many short periods of sleep throughout the day. Researchers have studied the sleep patterns of fire ants, especially their worker ants. They found that a worker fire ant can have about 253 sleep periods in one day. Each sleep period is very short, lasting about 1.1 minutes on average. So their daily routine might look something like this. Sleep for a little while. Wake up and go back to work. Work for a while. Then take another short nap. Wake up, and get back to work. Then do it all over again. It is almost like they have hundreds of tiny naps every day. 3.If humans slept like this, we might spend half the day saying, “Wait, did I just wake up?” But why do worker ants sleep this way? Ants do not live alone. They live together in large colonies, where different ants have different jobs. Some ants look for food. Some carry food and other materials. Some take care of the young ants. Others help clean and maintain the nest. So, the colony needs to keep working even when some ants are resting. In other words, ants do not need everyone to work at the same time. They also do not need everyone to rest at the same time. Their work and rest are spread out across the colony. We sometimes think that being hardworking means never stopping. Sometimes, taking a break is simply part of keeping going. Maybe we do not need to learn how to sleep 253 times a day. But maybe we can learn to stop for a moment when we really need to. So, the next time you see ants running around and looking busy, remember this. That little ant may have already taken several short naps today. Hundreds of naps a day. The History of Taiwan’s School Lunch Program.|原來那一餐也有歷史 29.09.2026 12mDid you like school lunch when you were a kid? Let me be honest. I didn’t really like it. It wasn’t terrible. It was just… pretty ordinary. There was rice, vegetables, soup, and sometimes fruit or milk. When I was a kid, I didn’t think much about it. Lunchtime meant eating lunch. But as I got older, I started to wonder about something. Where did the school lunch we ate every day actually come from? If we talk about the history of school lunch in Taiwan, we can start with 1951. Taiwan was still rebuilding after the war, many families were struggling, and children’s nutrition was an important concern. In 1951, UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund) provided skim milk powder for schools to give to students. So at first, school nutrition programs were not really the complete lunches we think of today. Then, in 1957, things moved one step further. Taiwan started testing school lunch programs in several schools. The government started thinking beyond giving children milk and began asking, “Can schools provide children with a more complete meal?” The school lunch system expanded greatly because of U.S. aid in the 1960s. The United States provided Taiwan with agricultural products such as wheat, flour, skim milk powder, and cooking oil. In 1964, Taiwan launched a large-scale school lunch program for children. From this point on, school lunch was no longer just about nutrition. It slowly became part of everyday school life. It was also about nutrition education, hygiene, and eating habits, not just filling children’s stomachs. But the system did not depend on American aid forever. In 1969, the U.S.-supported school lunch program ended. After that, Taiwan gradually moved toward running and funding its own school lunch programs. By the 1970s, school lunch became more organized and gradually spread to more schools. And then, it became a part of everyone's childhood. It’s that such an ordinary meal was connected to postwar Taiwan, international aid, government policy, and changes in Taiwanese eating habits. You’re not looking at a lunch that simply appeared one day. It slowly became what we know today after Taiwan went through many different periods of history. And if you ask me whether I miss school lunch now? Well…嗯……Not really. Please wash your lunch box after school.(放學後請把你的便當盒洗乾淨。)

15.09.2026 15mHave you ever noticed that operating rooms are often green? The walls may be green, the doctors’ clothes may be green, and even the sheets may be green or blue. I used to think it was just because green looked clean and calm. But actually, there is a much more practical reason. This matter has a lot to do with our eyes. Think about what a surgeon has to look at during an operation. They may spend several hours looking at blood and human tissue. That's right, many of them are red. Now imagine looking at red for hours. Your eyes are going to get red. And something interesting can happen when we stare at one color for too long. Our eyes can produce something called an afterimage. You can actually try it yourself. Look at something bright red for a while, and then look at a white wall. You may see a greenish color for a moment. Don’t worry. You are not seeing a ghost. It is just your eyes and brain reacting to the color you were looking at. So now, let’s go back to the operating room. A surgeon may spend hours looking at red tissue. If everything around them were bright white, it could create more glare and make the eyes feel even more tired. Green and blue-green give the eyes a different background. They also create a good contrast with the red tissue. That can make it easier for surgeons to focus on what they need to see. So the green is not really there to make the room look pretty. It is there because someone’s eyes have to work there for hours. Of course, not every operating room in the world is green. Some are blue, some are blue-green, and the design can be different from one hospital to another. So it is not a rule that every operating room must be green. The important thing is to create a comfortable visual environment for the medical team. And I think that is actually pretty interesting. Because when we see something like a green operating room, we usually think about how it looks. But the real question is not, “Does it look good?” The real question is, “Does it work?” And sometimes, good design is not about looking beautiful. It is about making someone’s job a little easier. So next time you see a green operating room, you can think about it this way. That color is not there to look good. It is there to help the eyes do their job. It's so cold in the operating room.(手術室裡面好冷。)

When nothing else works, give faith a try|沒辦法了,信仰拿出來用一下 08.09.2026 22mFor a few days recently, I was not feeling very well while recording my podcast. I did not feel comfortable, I could not sleep well at night, and I kept getting stuck while recording. At first, I thought I was probably just too tired, so I rested, made some changes, and tried to find the reason. But after trying different things for a few days, I still felt that something was not right. Then I thought, “Okay, I have tried everything I can, so maybe I should go see Mazu.” So I went to a Mazu temple, told Mazu what had been happening, and asked some questions by using divination blocks. The answers I got made me think, “Okay, I will leave this to you.” Later, I asked one more time, and the answer made me feel that the matter had been taken care of. I cannot prove what really happened. But for me at that moment, one thing was clear. I could finally let it go. This also reminded me of a story my friend once shared with me. This also reminded me of a story my friend once shared with me. One day, my husband went to the hospital and stayed with a client who was very close to the end of his life. When he came home, he continued to help take care of our baby as usual. But that same day, our baby suddenly had a fever of almost 40 degrees Celsius. The baby’s whole body turned purple, and the baby was shaking badly. We were completely panicked and did not know what to do. We quickly filled the bathtub with warm water and gave the baby a fever-reducing suppository. We thought it might be a bad cold, an infection, or some kind of sudden inflammation. The next day, we immediately took the baby to the hospital for a checkup, and the doctor even took an X-ray. But after the examination, the doctor said that there was nothing wrong. The baby still looked weak and sick, though, and we felt that something was strange. Then we started to wonder if our baby had been affected by something because the baby’s father had been with someone who had just passed away. So we quickly took out the blessed money you had given me from a Mazu pilgrimage. It’s a piece of blessed money that had been placed under Mazu’s palanquin during a pilgrimage. We burned it and used the ashes in the baby’s bath. Strangely enough, after the bath, the baby seemed to feel much better. The baby’s face even looked much better than before. Was it just a coincidence? Or was there really something we could not explain? I honestly do not know. But after that experience, I really felt that some things are hard not to believe. I can only say, “I don’t know.” That blessed money may not only have helped the baby, but also comforted the mother. When you are holding a baby who keeps crying and you do not know why, the hardest feeling may be, “What else can I do?” Later, I started to wonder if we all have moments like this. Normally, we are used to relying on ourselves. When we have a problem, we try to find a solution. But sometimes in life, we face situations where we really do not know what to do. You have done everything you can, asked everyone you can ask, and tried every method you can think of. But there is still no answer. At that point, faith may be something you can give a try. Some people pray to Mazu, some people pray at a church, and some people visit a shrine. Some people do not pray to any god. They simply talk to someone they trust. The forms are different, but maybe they are doing the same thing. They help someone who does not know what to do feel a little more at peace. So now I think we should not be too stubborn about these things. I am not saying that you should stop solving your own problems. You should still see a doctor when you need one, and you should still solve the problems you can solve. But when you have really tried your best, and you have done everything you can, but nothing works… Then maybe it is not a bad idea to give faith a try. Because it may not only help you deal with the problem. It may also comfort the part of you that is already tired. So,when nothing else works, give faith a try. -- 練習 give it a try試試看 Even if you might fail, you should still give it a try.(就算可能會失敗,你還是應該試試看。)

Why is water spinach on the Ghost Festival's offering table?|普渡桌上的怪奇空心菜 01.09.2026 21mWhen we talk about the Ghost Festival in Taiwan, we usually think about offering food to wandering spirits. People prepare meat, fruit, drinks, snacks, and many other familiar foods. But one day, I saw something that made me stop and wonder. There was a bowl of water spinach soup on the offering table. I thought, “Wait, why water spinach?” I eat water spinach all the time, but I had never thought about its connection with the Ghost Festival. One folk saying describes it as, “We have the heart to treat you, but we do not want you to stay.” The stem of water spinach is hollow, so people connected its empty center with the idea of not keeping the spirits here. We are happy to prepare food for you, but after you finish your meal, please go back to where you came from. It is almost like saying, “Dinner is on us, but please don’t stay overnight.” There is another interesting detail about how people prepare the water spinach. Some traditional practices use only water to blanch the vegetable, without adding much seasoning. The vegetable may also be left slightly undercooked instead of being fully cooked. This “half-cooked” idea is connected with the saying that the living and the spirits are not familiar with each other. You can eat your meal, and then we can go our separate ways. It is actually a very Taiwanese way of setting a boundary. There are also a few other folk stories about water spinach. In the past, water spinach was cheap and easy to find, especially when food was not as plentiful as it is today. Some people believed that a bowl of water spinach soup could make sure that even the weaker or less fortunate spirits had something warm to eat. There are also stories about the hollow stem itself. Some folk stories say that its hollow stem could help spirits that had difficulty eating, while others connect its strings with repairing a spirit’s body. These are folk beliefs, not scientific facts, and different families may have different traditions. What I find interesting is that the offering table has changed with our lives. Today, some people may even prepare dog food or cat food for pets that have passed away. Some families may prepare a baby bottle with milk for a baby they have lost. The things on the table may look completely different from traditional offerings. But the reason is actually very simple. People prepare something that reminds them of someone they miss. Maybe this is why I find the Ghost Festival less frightening when I think about it this way. The ghost you are afraid of may be someone else’s beloved family member. It may be someone’s parent, child, or even a beloved dog or cat. To you, it may be a ghost. But to someone else, it may be a one-of-a-kind treasure that they think about every day. Maybe that is what these offerings are really about. We cannot bring someone back, but we can still remember them. And maybe a simple bowl of water spinach soup is one small way of saying, “I remember you.” So maybe the Ghost Festival does not have to be only about fear. Sometimes, it is simply about remembering the ones we love. 練習 It's my treat.(我請客,常用於請吃飯或喝東西) It's on me.(這餐我請) I got this. / I've got this.(我來付) Let me get the bill. / Let me get this.(讓我來付帳) Let me treat you to lunch.(讓我請你吃午餐) -- 真心聽學英文+中文+台語也可以 聽我亂聊講廢話暫時忘卻人生苦惱的也來 喜歡的話,記得訂閱、收聽、分享、留言~ 您的多多收聽及分享,會讓我更有動力陪你從外太空說到土地公~ #生活英文 #台語 #空心菜湯 #農曆七月 #中元普渡 -- Hosting provided by SoundOn -

Some connections do not need memories. |我沒見過我爸爸的爸爸,但愛吃的食物居然一樣… 25.08.2026 20mHave you ever found out that you like the same food as someone in your family? Maybe it is a food that you have eaten since you were a child. For me, that food is taro rice cake, or what we call “Yù-guǒ-qiǎo” in Taiwan. Taro rice cake is a traditional food found in Taiwan and other areas where Minnan culture has developed. It is mainly made from taro and rice, and is usually eaten after being steamed. The taro gives it a special smell and a soft but slightly chewy texture. Many people enjoy it as a traditional snack, but it can also be seen during traditional festivals and religious ceremonies. Especially during the Ghost Festival, many Taiwanese people are particularly familiar with taro cakes. Have you ever looked at the shape of a taro rice cake and wondered why it looks like that? Its curved shape is often compared with a traditional divination block called a moon block, or jiaobei. The word “khiau” in Taiwanese can also describe something that is curved. This is one reason why the name and shape of this food are both interesting. It is not just a piece of food; it also carries some traditional culture. But there is another reason why taro rice cake is special to me. I have always liked eating it. One day, my grandmother told me something that I had never known before. She told me that my grandfather also loved taro rice cake. I never had the chance to meet my grandfather. He passed away before I was born. So I never sat next to him and ate together. I have never heard him say that he likes to eat taro cakes. But many years later, I found out that we both loved the same food. That made me wonder if this could be connected to genetics. I never got to meet my grandfather. But I found out that we both loved the same food. Maybe I will never know exactly why. But I think I am happy that I found this little connection. Because sometimes, family is not only about the memories we share. Sometimes, it is also about the little things that quietly stay with us. Maybe my grandfather and I simply had similar taste. Maybe our genes gave us some similar preferences. Or maybe it is simply a beautiful coincidence. I do not know the exact answer. Because the interesting part is not whether a gene made me love taro rice cake. The interesting part is that someone I never met seems to appear in my life through something so small. Eye color is passed down through genes from parents.(眼睛的顏色是透過基因從父母遺傳下來的。)

18.08.2026 22mFor many people, Qixi Festival is also a good time to visit Yue Lao and pray for love. In traditional Chinese culture, Yue Lao is believed to be the god who brings people together. The red thread is often used as a symbol of the connection between two people. When people visit Yue Lao, they usually hope to meet someone they can love and share their lives with. They hope to find a good relationship and live happily ever after. Of course, I also hope everyone who visits Yue Lao this year can find their special someone. But this year, I suddenly had a strange idea. What if Yue Lao were a real job? Would you want to apply for this job? Imagine that Yue Lao works actually in a modern company. His job might be much harder than we imagine. He may have to help people find suitable partners every day. He may also have to manage thousands or even millions of red threads. If Yue Lao really worked in a modern company, I think he would also need a customer service department. People might call and ask, “Can I check the progress of my relationship?” Someone might say, “I visited Yue Lao last year, but I still have no good news.” Another person might ask, “Why did my friend find someone so quickly?” Someone might even ask, “Can I change partners?” I think Yue Lao 's customer service department would be extremely busy. I suddenly feel a little sorry for Yue Lao. We always want to know why our wishes haven’t come true yet. We hope to meet the right person soon. But what if Yue Lao has already worked incredibly hard? Perhaps we only see the result and forget the progress. When we pray to Yue Lao, we often hope to meet someone who understands us. We hope to meet someone who respects and cares about us. But maybe we should also ask ourselves a question. Are we also willing to become that kind of person? We may want a good relationship, but we should also learn how to build a good relationship. We shouldn't always demand that others understand us while being unwilling to understand others. Maybe the good connection that Yue Lao gives us needs our own warmth to make it happen. So, this Qixi Festival, I will still visit Yue Lao. Of course, I hope that one day I can meet my Mr.Right. I hope we can understand and cherish each other, and stay together. I will not give up just because the answer has not appeared yet. After all, maybe Yue Lao is just very busy. Because if all the Yue Laos suddenly went on strike, we might be the ones who suffer. Through this imaginary job called Yue Lao, we can learn to see the people who are working hard around us every day. Maybe a little more patience can make someone’s day better. Maybe a little kindness can create a new connection. And maybe that is where a good relationship really begins. -- 【今日單字】 make allowance for體諒、顧及 Please make allowance for her lack of experience.(請原諒她缺乏經驗。)
