Sir Alistair Wilkes claims descent from the notorious John Wilkes, whose quarrels with George III's government scandalised eighteenth-century England, and he has invited the Belgian Detective and our narrator to dine in Belgrave Square. He promises the resurrection of a scandal that has slept for a hundred and sixty years.Around his table: his second wife; his daughter by his first marriage; a former Under-Secretary at the Home Office; a red-faced Member of Parliament; a newspaper proprietor; an historian; and a wealthy American widow. Sir Alistair has arranged the seating so that they will quarrel. They do.Then he announces that he holds evidence of a secret arrangement behind the famous Number Forty-Five, and that certain reputations were purchased at the expense of constitutional liberty. The papers are in a dispatch box in the library, in full view of everyone. He withdraws to his study to take a telephone call and locks the door behind him. The minutes pass. When the door is forced, Sir Alistair lies dead beside his desk — and documents have vanished from a box that nobody touched.ℹ️ FOR LISTENERSThis is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers and by the real eighteenth-century radical John Wilkes — but the plot, characters and text are entirely our own creation. The invitation is engraved on thick ivory paper and bears the crest of the Earl of Harlow: a weekend at Ormsby Park, a Palladian house at the end of a mile of chestnut trees, with three Van Dycks in the gallery and a family fortune that began, rather conveniently, in 1721.On the back, in the Earl's own hand: I believe that a crime committed in 1720 may shortly result in another. Your discretion would be appreciated. The Belgian Detective and our narrator find a remarkable company assembled: the Earl's young second wife and her emeralds, his gambling son, his formidable sister, a red-faced financier and his bored wife, an Oxford historian, and a quiet young woman cataloguing the family papers. The Earl has received three anonymous letters. The last reads: Before Sunday, one Harlow will answer for the others.Over dinner the talk turns to the South Sea Bubble, and the historian loses his temper. Rain over South Frederick Street, a travelling trunk that will not quite fit a cupboard, and a small dog who hopes that somebody is going somewhere.Captain Arthur, who runs a private inquiry agency with Anne Foster, is kneeling beside the trunk with a tape measure when a well-dressed lady arrives to thank him. He recovered her missing brooch last Friday, she says, in her drawing room in Rathgar. He has lost weight since then. He looks quite different in daylight. He spent last Friday at a builder's yard. The gentleman Mrs Burgess met was broader, with darker hair, and he left her a modest, well-printed card bearing the Captain's name, an address in Rathmines, and the name of his "representative".He did recover the brooch. He did it competently. He charged rather more than the real Captain would have done. Smoke hanging above the roofs again, leaves thinning on the Green, and in a tall house in Mount Street, a charity reception in aid of winter boots for boys starting their apprenticeships.Captain Arthur has come with Anne Foster, his partner in the agency and his fiancée, and with the formidable Lady Eleanor. He has forgotten the subscription. He has been warned that at good causes, a detective is seldom allowed to remain a guest. The guest of honour is Mr Charles Ellison: retired printer, generous committee man, a gentleman who remembers the names of the boys he has helped. He gives a short, good speech. Then he mentions, quietly, that a former employee with an old grievance may call later, and that he will deal with it downstairs. An hour later the Captain steps out onto a dark terrace for a breath of air — and through a lighted study window, he watches that respected gentleman bring a heavy candlestick down on another man's head.Ellison does not deny the blow. He says he was attacked first, with a piece of broken glass. And the Captain, who saw everything through that window, did not see quite everything. With the wedding set for the eighth of February, the Captain and Anne must separate what one honest witness saw from what a very reasonable man would like him to believe.ℹ️ FOR LISTENERSThis is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers — but the plot, characters and text are entirely our own creation. All characters and events in this story are fictional. No affiliation, endorsement, or official connection is implied.💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTSThe Captain saw the blow with his own eyes — and the whole case turned on what he couldn't see.
