  • SJTE 13: Week 2 EXPLORE - The Church That Looks Like Jesus (1:15-23) 17.10.2026 49m
The SJTE Companion Journal, Small Group Guide, and Daily Affirmations are available here (free download).SummaryIn this Week 2 Explore, Nick and Jamie recap Paul's prayer in Ephesians 1:15–23 before diving deeper into what it means that believers are already resurrected, ascended, and enthroned with Christ, how to think about spiritual forces of darkness without over- or under-estimating them, and why all of this matters for ordinary daily life. Along the way: a milestone update and the first Ephesians Wild Way Circle.Week 2 RecapFri (prior week): Opened the prayer (1:15–17) — asking for a spirit of wisdom and revelation to grasp what's already true in ChristMon: The prayer's "so that" — hearts enlightened to know the hope we're called to, our worth as God's inheritance, and the immeasurable power at work in usTue: God's power displayed in raising and enthroning Jesus far above every other powerWed: Jesus as head over the church, which is a picture of union and self-giving love, not hierarchy; the church as his body, not a buildingThu: The first "imagination prayer" episode of the seriesFri: Moved into chapter 2 (chapter 2 recap comes next week)Deep DivesResurrected, ascended, enthroned: Believers don't just share in Christ's resurrection but in his ascension and enthronement, right now. This resurrection power is mostly quiet and costly (forming Christ's character, enabling self-giving love) rather than spectacular. Nick also pushes back on the prosperity gospel: being enthroned with Christ doesn't exempt believers from suffering. Power in Christ is redefined as service, not domination.Spiritual forces of darkness: Paul and Jesus both speak of spiritual powers matter-of-factly. Jamie names two errors: denying these forces exist, or becoming consumed with spiritual warfare and suspicion of ordinary objects and culture. The healthy view: aware, not fearful, since believers are already seated above these powers in Christ. The church as Christ's visible continuation: A quick note on the Greek word kephale ("head"), saved for fuller treatment in chapter 5, followed by the idea that the church should have the same effect on earth that Jesus did (CEB Study Bible), together forming one body rather than isolated individuals or isolated congregations. So what?: Grounding the chapter's abstract truths in daily life. Because believers are already holy, accepted, and secure in Christ, there's no need to strive to prove worth to God or others, freeing people to operate from confidence and love rather than fear. The Wild Way exists for people hungry to walk the narrow path of love, as modelled by Jesus, resisting versions of Christianity that claim his name without reflecting his love and teaching. • SJTE 07: Week 1 EXPLORE - Beyond the Personal Transaction (1:3-14) 10.10.2026 49m
The SJTE Companion Journal, Small Group Guide, and Daily Affirmations are available here (free download). In this Week 1 Explore, Nick and Jamie recap a week of meditations on Ephesians 1:3–14 before each taking a deeper dive into a topic from the week: what it really means to be "in Christ," the two orthodox views of atonement, a closer look at "holy and blameless in love," and why salvation is bigger than a private transaction.Deep DivesJamie — Being "in Christ": Union with Christ means believers are already resurrected, ascended, and seated with him — regardless of circumstance. Draws a parallel between the Jew/Gentile divide Paul addressed in Ephesus and the denominational splintering of the modern church: in Christ, there are no factions.Nick — Atonement, two orthodox views: Contrasts penal substitution (Christ bears God's wrath in our place) with Christus Victor (Christ's death and resurrection as liberation from sin, death, and evil, the more common view in the early church, with strong echoes in Ephesians 1:7). Jamie — "Holy and blameless in love": A translation/punctuation note (NRSVUE vs. NIV/ESV) reframes this as identity, not just origin: we are holy and blameless in how we love. Cites N.T. Wright on the church as an attractive alternative way of life, and Alistair McIntosh on showing the world what Christians are for.Nick — Salvation as cosmic and communal: On verse 10 ("gather up all things in him"): salvation isn't a private, individual transaction but a restoration project for all creation, with the church as a working model of heaven and earth overlapping now.The Wild Way exists for people hungry to walk the narrow path of love, as modelled by Jesus, resisting versions of Christianity that claim his name without reflecting his love and teaching. With all wisdom and insight 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. The Wild Way exists for people hungry to walk the narrow path of love, as modelled by Jesus, resisting versions of Christianity that claim his name without reflecting his love and teaching. Our goal is to grow communities where the character and love of Christ are formed in us for the sake of others.DONATE TO THE WILD WAY.  We are a donor-supported community. • LS 36: Series recap, listener emails, and what's coming up 19.04.2026 58m
In this final episode of Liminal Spaces, we step out from behind the microphone to introduce ourselves and reflect on the Liminal Spaces journey.Meet Nick & JamieJamie spent 15 years as a Biblical Studies teacher and teacher librarian, is finishing her MA in Theology and Culture, and is completing her first novel. Nick served as a church pastor for nearly 30 years and holds a master's degree in spiritual formation. Together we are a blended family with six young adult children, living in a small, remote, rain-soaked town on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.Series RecapWe journeyed through seven weeks exploring liminal spaces, those threshold places between the old and the new, using Israel's wilderness journey as our guide.Week 1: Defined liminal spaces and how Lent itself is an intentional liminal season. Week 2: Remembered Egypt and how good seasons can become places we must leave. Week 3: Entered the disorientation where old landmarks disappear. Week 4: Faced the long waiting, despair, and dark nights of the soul with Elijah. Week 5: Discovered that life and provision are possible in the wilderness. Week 6: Noticed signs of new life, pruning, and abiding. Week 7: Stood at the Jordan, looking back at God's faithfulness and forward to the Promised Land. The Triduum walked us through Holy Week: Maundy Thursday's new commandment, Good Friday at the cross, Holy Saturday's hidden work of God, and Easter Sunday's resurrection joy.Key PointsThe trust and daily dependence we learn in the wilderness is the same trust we need in the Promised Land, even when life is good.God may be most powerfully at work when he appears most absent. When we are broken and in despair, God often speaks very quietly, as he did with Elijah. It is okay to honestly cry out and lament to God. He wants to be there with us.What's NextA Slow Journey Through Ephesians begins October 2026. We are also turning A Slow Journey Through John into a devotional book.In the meantime, go back to episode one of A Slow Journey Through John, or check out our Rhythms of Life workbook on Amazon.Start a Wild Way CircleInterested in starting a small group?
