October 15, 2015: The Zamii070 Incident (TW Suicide, Cyberbullying) 18.10.2026 1h 10mThis week, Emily and V look into another bummer event. In late October 2015, a 19‑year‑old fan artist from Arizona named Paige Paz, known online as Zamii070, posted a video from a hospital room after surviving a suicide attempt. For months, she had been the target of escalating harassment from corners of the Steven Universe fandom — a community built around a show that preached empathy, communication, and radical kindness. Her hospitalization forced the internet to confront an uncomfortable truth: how did one of the most progressive fandom spaces of the mid‑2010s become a breeding ground for mobbing, purity tests, and moral vigilantism? Please read the TWs in the episode title and take care of yourself before choosing to listen; there is nothing graphic and no details are disclosed, but be cautious if concerned.SourcesThe Daily Dotr/stevenuniverser/HobbyDramaJezebelAlphaOmegaSin on YouTubeOnline Hate and Hurt by Jessica Ruth AustinPromoTGI Femslash - Our favorite fan convention, TGIF/F, is happening soon! October 14-16, 1988: The Blake's 7 Slash Wars Build Fandom's Fourth Wall 11.10.2026 1h 43mDown and... safe? This week, V and Emily are joined by fandom scholar Lena Barkin (The Fanthropologist) to discuss an event that should, really, be as notorious in fanfiction culture as the Anne Rice debacle or Cassandra Clare kerfuffle: the Blake's 7 Slash Wars. This seismic, terrible fanwank is technically still ongoing, but hit its heyday forty years ago as the cast and crew of Blake's 7 hit back at fans -- like, specific, named fans -- who dared to write Blake/Avon slash. This supersized episode looks at the dangers of parasocial relationships, why fandom and media celebs should never cross the streams, and the nature of slash in the landscape of the 1980s. Lena brings an important POV as someone who is actively in Blake's 7 fandom today -- and is a slasher. Who do you think is the real villain of this story? She is here to join our cafeteria clique as we discuss the 2004 movie phenomenon Mean Girls, and how the worldwide fandom for this movie a) destroyed Lindsay Lohan, and b) shaped our own high school experiences to varying degrees. (While we didn't have time to get into it in the episode, the Broadway musical and 2024 film musical are also big fandoms in their own right! Toxic femslashers rise!) We discuss the differences between American and British school culture, the 2000s cultural exports of the United States, and the continual cycle of Hollywood child sacrifices. September 24, 2014: In Which We Got Jossed By Dan & Phil 20.09.2026 52mPHIL LESTER, YOU’RE A GENIUS! This week’s episode is a little different. This week, Emily and V finally release an episode that has been sitting in our vault for over a year — not because it wasn’t good, but because the universe pulled off one of the most chaotic, timeline‑breaking acts of accidental fandom trolling we’ve ever witnessed. We originally recorded this episode as a thoughtful, slightly exasperated look at Dan & Phil shipping culture — how two creators became the center of one of the internet’s most enduring RPF fandoms, how fans blurred the lines between performance and reality, and why it’s important to remember the fiction part of Real Person Fiction. We talked about boundaries. We talked about ethics. We talked about how there was no evidence of a real‑life romantic relationship. And then — about 24 hours later — Dan and Phil announced their relationship. Not only that: they announced they had been together since 2009.So not only did reality Joss our episode…It Jossed fifteen years of fandom history with one press release. We took a breath. We texted each other memes of Ben Affleck smoking on a balcony (you know the one), and then shelved the episode until it fit the calendar. And now — finally — it is time. Join 2025 TWIFH discussing 2014 Dan & Phil, and let 2026 you laugh at our misfortune.---SourcesFanloreThe Secrets of the SlashersAre Dan & Phil In a Relationship? September 13, 2005: Supernatural Premieres, Lightning Bottled, with Heidi Tandy 13.09.2026 1h 2mHunters, get your salt! This week, V and Emily are joined by friend-of-the-pod Heidi Tandy, who calls in from San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to discuss the fandom that spells SDCC for her, and thousands of others in the fannish community: Supernatural. The premiere of the show on the WB (progenitor of The CW) in 2005 changed fandom permanently, in more ways than could possibly be discussed in one hour. But SPN also changed fandom for Heidi, personally, in ways big and small, and we’re delighted to hear all about them from the room where it happened. We dish about LiveJournal’s early rush to create communities, the prevalence of Wincest fanfiction, and how Supernatural’s relationship to its fans evolved over its long run. September 4, 1995: Xena Reinvents Fandom 06.09.2026 1hAiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiiii! This week, Emily and V head back to the mid‑90s — the era of dial‑up internet and aggressively pointy shoulderpads — to revisit the rise of Xena: Warrior Princess. It’s hard to overstate how much this show reshaped the fandom landscape: a morally complicated heroine, a narrative built on redemption… and a relationship between two women that sparked decades of essays, fanfic, fanvids, and lovingly chaotic forum debates. The Xenites weren’t just early adopters of online fandom. They were architects of it. This week, TWIFH is delighted to bring you a special preview episode of Lez Hang Out, the #1 lesbian hangout podcast and a super-fun listen for fans of fandom. Our good friend -- and CONstruction co-host, @jarrow from TGIF/F! -- is their expert guest on this episode, a deep dive into the batshittery of Pretty Little Liars. Check out what they have to say, and listen to our episode over on the Lez Hang Out feed, too!---This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with return guest and founder of TGI Femslash, John Arrow (@jarrow272), to talk about the 7 season teen mystery drama, Pretty Little Liars, for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. Come with us on a journey back to 2010, when television seasons were 26 episodes long and showrunners were just starting to figure out how to harness the power of social media to engage with fandoms in a big way. Pretty Little Liars itself does not age all that well in many ways, especially in the treatment of their one and only trans character; but back in the 2010s it was actually considered pretty progressive for having several queer characters and a lesbian showrunner. If you were queer or questioning in the early aughts you 1000% knew about Shay Mitchell as sporty lesbian Emily Fields who seemingly turned every woman within a 5 mile radius of her gay. If you are a lesbian of a certain age, Emily likely played a role in your own coming out journey too.For those of you who were part of the #BooRadleyVanCullen (like Leigh), you may recall more of the social fandom experience than you do the plot. Before Twitter became the cesspool it is today, there were the golden days of weekly live tweeted episodes of PLL with the cast members, the showrunner and the writers. The extremely unhinged plot made it the perfect group-viewing show and we highly recommend that if you have never watched PLL, you watch with a friend or three. While we do talk about a lot of the major plot points, the whole series is just too convoluted for us to really spoil anything for you. Even hardcore fans like John find something new in each rewatch. August 2 - August 18, 2020: BTS ARMY Wages War on AO3 09.08.2026 50m#StreamBTSDynamiteNewSong! This week, V and Emily head back to the days of quarantine to look at an event that is... sigh. It showcases the culture differences between pre-2020 fandom and post-2020 fandom, Twitter fandom and the lineage of Livejournal-originated fandom, and corporate internet versus free internet. When fans take it upon themselves to become de facto employees for their blorbos, are they still acting out of fandom or does it become purely parasocial? Is there a difference? What is the line between self-interested fandom and selfish fandom? Plus, why -- yet again -- AO3 is different from other sites, and why those differences matter. We're very nervous putting this episode out. We've been told repeatedly not to cover BTS or we'll get yelled at. Please don't yell at us, we did our best!!1! #JIMIN!SourcesFanlore: BTS vs. AO3Fanlore: Kpop Stan TwitterKpop Army Battle Royale by Geoff GolbergFanlore: BTS ARMYFanlore: How BTS Became...Fanlore: BTSTime MagazineFandom ExileReading the Room: The Magicians, BTS, and the Responsibility of Creating Popular CulturePromoVirtual TGIF/F - Our friends at TGI Femslash have just announced a brand-new, online fan con happening this summer. July 1998: The STIFfie Awards Have "Nothing to Hide" 02.08.2026 46mSlash fans, rise up! (Sorry.) This week, V and Emily look at a triple-shot of '90s slash goodness: the multifandom zine "Nothing to Hide," the STIFfie Awards of 1998, and STIFfie founder Mary Urhausen. We're wading deeper into a pool that we thought we knew the depths of but boy, were we wrong, because there are shows that got slashed that we NEVER thought had slashy sexiness content. Plus, a look at the 1997 MediaWest controversy regarding slash content ~not being family-friendly enough~ (blegh) and our first toe in the waters of Beauty & the Beast (TV) fandom. Come splash with us, the pool's big enough for everyone! July 21, 2012: The Ballad of Derpy Hooves 26.07.2026 51mMuffins! This week, Emily and V are... surprisingly heartwarmed? Pleasantly shocked? Tentatively on board with a fandom they were very nervous to cover? We're talking about Bronies this week, which is to say, adult (mostly male) fans of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. This week in fandom history, they were acknowledged by their show canon with the inclusion of their fandomwide blorbo, a backgrounder named... well... therein lies the wank. It's a rare thing when both Emily and V agree with all sides of a fandom argument, but this is one of those cases. Everyone was right, and everyone was wrong, and while nobody won, nobody really lost, either. Get your background cels aligned and hoist your mailbag onto your shoulder, because this is the Ballad of Derpy Hooves.
