  • 322. Energy Debt and Burnout: Running on Empty Isn't a Time Management Problem, with Dr. Sarah Vadeboncoeur 12.10.2026 33m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview Dr. Sarah Vadeboncoeur is a Canadian naturopathic doctor who supports high-achieving women who feel like they have hit a wall. Many of them have ignored their health for a long time and perhaps feel destabilized. Dr. Sarah and I use this episode to talk about burnout, brain fog, and the grief that comes when you can no longer perform the way you used to. This matters for shop owners because so many of us have been rewarded for carrying everything since we were children. Dr. Sarah explains that when our capacity to recover goes down but the demands stay the same, we start spending more energy than we take in. She compares it to opening a profit and loss statement and seeing expenses exceed income month after month. By the end of this conversation, you will understand the four categories of energy (body, brain, heart, and spirit). You will also have a simple way to check in with yourself and a way to line up your time, money, and energy with what you actually value. Our Key Topics Why so many high-achieving women feel grief when they can't perform at their old level, and why that grief is tied to identity What energy debt is, and how it resembles a business running at a loss How the four energy categories (body, brain, heart, and spirit) each drain differently Why water, sleep, and regular meal timing come first How to build your own energy prescriptions and ignore what others are doing Why choosing your number one thing, and defining your weekly work hours, changes where your energy goes   Key Takeaways For Shop Owners Energy works like a profit and loss statement. If you spend more than you put back in day after day, you end up in debt, and you may not recover it overnight. Dr. Sarah points out that for many women, the ability to recover drops while the demands stay the same, so the gap keeps growing. Fatigue is not only physical. Dr. Sarah describes four categories: body, brain, heart, and spirit. You can be doing well in one and still feel terrible if another is drained, so it helps to know which one needs attention. Start with the basics, then listen to yourself. Dr. Sarah's bare bones are water, at least seven to eight hours of sleep, and regular meal timing. Beyond that, she encourages you to stop and ask what you need right now, because no one knows that better than you do. Check your battery before you spend it. A 30-second scan each morning shows where you are, and you can decide where your best energy goes. Without that plan, most of us give it all to working hours and leave the scraps for the people who matter most. Align your time, money, and energy with what you value. Pick your actual number one thing and make one small change that supports it. Dr. Sarah and I both see how hard it is for self-employed people to decide how many hours they want to work, and without that decision everything else fills in underneath. If you have been carrying a lot for a long time, I invite you to listen and notice which of the four energy categories could use a little attention this week. "The people that we claim to be the most important are usually getting the scraps of energy that we have left after we've overspent all day long." - Dr. Sarah Vadeboncoeur INSERT IMAGE HERE Resources Mentioned and Related Podcasts Join me in The Collective: a 12-month coaching experience for established business owners who want a well-run, profitable business that supports the life they want to live. • 321. Customizing Your Vision and Values as Your Business Grows 05.10.2026 20m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview As our businesses grow, our roles change. The things that worked in an earlier stage may not be what we need in the next one. In this episode, I'm talking about what it means to stay true to your own vision, values, taste, and way of doing business as your shop evolves. I share a story from the days when I taught paint workshops and how a room full of people could start with the same supplies, the same guidance, and the same goal, yet create completely different projects. That's a lot like running a business. We need the foundational pieces, but we also get to decide what our business looks like and how we build it. As a business grows, especially when a team becomes part of the picture, our vision needs to grow too. I walk through the areas I believe are important to get clear on, including motivation, intent, leadership, customers, team, standards, culture, and values, and how those pieces can help guide the decisions we make. Our Key Topics Why staying true to your own vision matters as your business changes and grows How having clear vision and mission can help you avoid copying what other businesses are doing What needs to expand in your vision as your business grows beyond just you Why motivation, intent, customers, leadership, team, standards, and culture are important parts of a three-to-five-year vision How your values can become a decision filter for your strategy, marketing, customer experience, and the inventory you choose to sell   Key Takeaways For Shop Owners You get to build your business your way. Having the right foundational pieces doesn't mean there is only one way to use them. Just like the people in my workshop created completely different signs from the same materials, our businesses can reflect our own taste, vision, and uniqueness. Your vision has to grow with your business. As your role changes and your team grows, your vision needs to become something other people can understand and get behind. It can no longer live only in your head or exist only as your personal vision. Get clear on what you actually need from the business. I talk about the difference between motivation and intent. Motivation is what drives you, while intent gets into the results and resources you need, including time, money, energy, and the impact you want to have. Your business vision needs to include more than the founder. As you grow, you need to think about who you are serving, what your team looks like, your standards, and the culture you are creating. The business and brand become bigger than just your own thing. Your values can help you make decisions. When your vision, mission, and values are clear, they can become filters for decisions around your strategy, marketing, customer experience, inventory, and the way you serve your clients. • 320. Curating Your Business: When Your Ambition Evolves 28.09.2026 27m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Want to work with me to plan out your week so it's built with intention? Something that works easily for you and your business? I'm hosting a workshop on September 29th to help you do just that! Join me for Your CEO Time: From Spinning to Soaring. It's only $47 and will change the way you look at your time - I promise. Episode Overview It's story time. In this episode, I'm sharing something personal about how my business ambitions have changed and evolved over the years.  Ten years ago, I realized that even though my husband's and my businesses were successful and our lives were busy, I was ready for a big change. I had to step back and dig deep on these questions: What do I want to do, be, have, and experience in my life? From there, we began designing our life first and reverse engineering our businesses around it.  It was hard. But we did it. We started living differently. We stayed open to possibilities. We sold some of our businesses. We moved to our crooked cottage by the sea. I started my coaching business and my Inner Circle. And yet, here we are, an entire decade later, I'm asking those same questions again. I'm curating again and I'm feeling extremely ambitious and excited for what the next 10 years will look like in my business. So let's talk about it: what it means to stay curious, to listen to what is changing, and to continue refining both business and life as our priorities evolve.  I also share what I'm building next, including the Collective, a new space that brings life and business planning together for entrepreneurs who want to build sustainable businesses around the lives they actually want. Let's do this. Our Key Topics Why I realized that a successful, busy business and a full life weren't necessarily the same thing How a moment of clarity changed the way my husband and I thought about our ambitions, our business, and our life. What it means to design your life first and then reverse engineer the business around it. Why staying curious and listening to yourself and your clients matters as your business evolves. How I'm bringing life and business coaching together in the next phase of my work with The Collective - you'll want to hear about this!   Key Takeaways For Shop Owners Your definition of ambition can change. Ten years ago, my ambition looked very different from what it looks like today. I've learned that it's worth revisiting what I actually want instead of continuing toward goals simply because they were once important to me. Start with the life you want, then build the business around it. Rather than automatically allowing the business to dictate how life looks, I've found value in asking what I want for my life first and then figuring out what needs to be true for the business to support that vision. Curiosity creates room for change. I talk about continuing to listen, including listening to clients, pushing boundaries, and not being afraid to change. Staying fresh in business can mean being willing to reconsider how you're doing things. Fear can be part of making a meaningful change. I've had ideas and decisions that I knew I wanted to act on but delayed because I was afraid. I'm learning again that moving into something new can require working through that fear rather than waiting for it to disappear. Your business can be built around your needs and values. I'm thinking differently about business support now, with more attention on the wellbeing of the entrepreneur alongside the business itself. For me, that means creating something sustainable and customized rather than simply adding more information, strategies, or things to do. • 319. The One Thing Retailers Need to Know Before October 21.09.2026 18m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview As October approaches, it seems that most retailers are either fired up and ready for the season or feeling frozen and overwhelmed by everything that is coming. Q4 is usually quite busy for most making it easy to move into a reactive mode: doing what we have always done without being strategic about where the business is headed. Kind of like, "we know this (whatever this is) works, so let's just do that again." Sound familiar? Before getting caught up in marketing, events, teams, and everything else that comes with a busy season, I want retailers to get very clear on their numbers. Understanding operating costs, margins, profit goals, budgets, and what you want to take home gives you a much clearer picture of what you are actually trying to achieve. When I know my numbers, I can make better decisions about where to spend my time and where to push the gas or maybe pump the brakes. In this episode, I talk about looking month by month through October, November, December, and January so I can understand where the business is today, where I want it to go, and what I need to direct as the founder and CEO in Q4. Our Key Topics Why getting clear on your numbers should come before getting busy with marketing and other Q4 activity. What financial clarity can tell you about your budget, operating costs, margins, profit goals, and what you want to take home. How looking at October through January helps you understand what you are trying to achieve and which levers you need to pull. Why your role as the founder and visionary is to direct the business rather than try to be the person doing everything. How knowing your numbers can help you make decisions, stay focused, and avoid reacting to the noise of Q4. Key Takeaways For Shop Owners Know your numbers before the busy season takes over. You need to understand the financial side of your business before you start making decisions about marketing, events, hiring, or other investments. Without that clarity, it is much harder to know what you are actually trying to accomplish. (Need help? Grab my Profit Planning Masterclass for $47 now. It's available as a stand alone course until the end of October!) Look beyond a single month. I encourage retailers to look at October, November, December, and even January together. Seeing the months ahead as a whole gives a better understanding of what is coming and what needs to happen financially. Get curious about the numbers. Instead of simply looking at the numbers, you can ask why they are what they are, what they make possible, and what you need to do to reach the results you want. That curiosity can turn the math into a tool for making decisions. Step into the CEO role. As the visionary and founder, your job is to direct the business. That means understanding where you are investing money, what needs attention, and where your time is best spent rather than trying to do every piece yourself. Build goals around the business and life you want now. You do not need to make your goals about beating last year's numbers. (In fact, please don't!) You need a clear picture of the business as it is today, where you want it to go, what you want the profit to provide, and what you want for your life. Want to work with me to plan out your week? • 318. Navigating the "Messy Middle" of Business Growth 14.09.2026 24m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview In this episode, I'm sharing a behind-the-scenes look at what it feels like to be in the messy middle of making big, important changes in a business. My friends, I am in the middle of it! So let's talk about it: In this episode, I'm sharing the challenges (and major wins) I've been facing while upgrading my own business, from competing priorities and projects taking longer than expected to learning new things and asking for help. I also share what has helped me move through the mess. I'm reminding myself to take action, invest in the right people, return to the reason behind the work, and ask what I actually need in the moment. For me, this is also a reminder that as our businesses evolve, our roles evolve too. The goal isn't to avoid every difficult season. It's to have the systems, people, mindset, and perspective that help us navigate those seasons well. Our Key Topics Why business growth can feel messy: How evolving businesses often require us to evolve our roles, systems, and priorities too. How to move forward when things feel overwhelming: Using imperfect action, realistic expectations, and the willingness to adjust when plans take longer than expected. Why you don't have to do everything yourself: Recognizing when to hire, delegate, ask for help, or learn something step by step. What it takes to lead well through change: Taking care of yourself, challenging negative self-talk, and making sure you're grounded enough to lead your business and team. How to decide what deserves your time: Returning to the bigger purpose, prioritizing the people in front of you, and using the four Ds: do, delegate, defer, and delete. Key Takeaways For Shop Owners Our role has to evolve as the business evolves. I can't keep approaching every new stage of my business exactly as I did before. Growth often requires me to step into a different kind of leadership. Imperfect action is still action. I've found that taking action, even when it isn't perfect, helps me move forward instead of staying stuck in stress and anxiety. I don't need every piece figured out before I begin. I don't have to do everything myself. One of the ways I've been moving through this season is by hiring people who already know how to do some of the things I'm trying to learn or accomplish. Delegating has helped me move forward. I need to take care of myself in order to lead well. I'm reminding myself that wearing myself out is not a badge of honor. Sometimes what I need is a morning off, a step back, or simply some space to get grounded again. I can choose what stays on my list. The four Ds give me a practical way to look at my priorities: what do I need to do, delegate, defer, or delete? Not everything that lands on my list needs to happen right now. • 317. Take Control of Your Time as a Business Owner 07.09.2026 35m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview Of course you love what you do - and that's why you started your business. But perhaps you also took this leap because you wanted more control over your schedule and more freedom to do the things you love outside of work. This episode centers around answering a question that has come up countless times in my years as a retail coach and that I have even grappled with in the past as a business owner: where should I be spending my time? As business owners, we have three major resources to manage: time, money, and capacity or energy. Time is finite, which means we have to be intentional about how we use it.  We're covering a lot of ground in this episode from setting clear boundaries between work and personal life, why you should plan your week around the life you want to live now, and a time management framework that helps me think about where my time is best spent as CEO of my business.  I hope from this episode you'll think about what you really want in your life and then reverse engineer your business time to reflect your life goals and needs. Our Key Topics Why work expands to fill the time available and how setting clear boundaries can change that (Parkinson's Law at work!) How to build a life-first business by defining personal needs and capacity before determining work hours Why the business owner's role needs to evolve as the business grows, including shifting from founder to CEO What CEO and business development time should include, from planning and financials to marketing, sales, and customer experience How to protect your time, energy, and capacity by reducing time spent on administrative and repeatable tasks Key Takeaways For Shop Owners Your personal time needs boundaries, too. Stop thinking you need to work all the time. I've learned that I have to define my own boundaries around when I work and when I'm finished, because there will always be something else I could be doing in my business. Your business gets to fit into your life. Look honestly at what your life needs right now, whether that means time off, family time, travel, creative time, or simply space to enjoy your life. Then you can determine how much work time actually fits. Your CEO time cannot be the first thing to go when you are short on time. Business development includes planning, financials, decision-making, vision, and intentional learning. I've found that this is often the first category to disappear when things get busy, even though it is where the business needs leadership most. This is so important. Not everything that feels productive is moving the business forward. I want to distinguish between meaningful marketing and sales work and simply staying busy with activities like posting on social media. Dedicated time for strategy, events, emails, launches, customer experience, merchandising, conversion, and other sales activities matters. You must protect your energy. Our businesses can only grow when we are taking care of ourselves and protecting our energy. I see this as part of leadership because the energy and enthusiasm at the top of the business affect the culture and the people who interact with it. Want to work with me to plan out your week? • 316. How to Build a Business That Works for Your Life 31.08.2026 28m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Episode Overview I'm back after taking a longer-than-expected summer pause from the podcast! That pause gave me space to think about what I want next for my business, what I want my life to look like, and how those two things fit together. After years of building, coaching, and running a business, I've been thinking a lot about what deserves my energy and what no longer needs to come along for the climb. In this episode, I'm sharing some of the questions I've been working through with clients and myself. I talk about business seasons, celebrating the times when things are going well, recognizing that there will always be another mountain to climb, and making sure we are not carrying unnecessary weight up that mountain. Most of all, I want us to think beyond simply building a bigger business. I want to build a business that works for the life I want, and I want you to consider what your business needs to do for you, personally, financially, and for your dreams. Our Key Topics Why taking a pause can create space to think about what I actually want from my business How different business seasons can shape what my business needs to look like right now What my fuels and drains reveal about the work, people, and parts of my business that deserve my energy How removing fear, guilt, sunk cost, and other people's expectations can help me make intentional business decisions Why the goal isn't always bigger and better, but building a business that works for my life with intention, energy, and fun Key Takeaways For Shop Owners A pause does not mean I've stopped building. I took time away from the podcast while still working deeply with clients, hosting retreats, and thinking about what comes next. Sometimes creating space is part of moving forward. I need to know what I actually want from my business. That includes what I need from it personally and financially, how it supports my dreams, and whether the meaningful parts of the work are still lighting me up. I can make decisions without being ruled by fear, guilt, sunk costs, or other people's expectations. Removing those things helps me look at what I would choose to build intentionally rather than simply continuing what already exists. There will always be another mountain. Business will have highs, dips, and new challenges. I cannot eliminate every hard season, but I can pay attention to how I'm climbing and whether I have the right people and the right load with me. Bigger and better is not always the goal. I'm thinking more about designing a business with intention, energy, enthusiasm, and fun instead of treating growth as the only measure of success. • 315. What Really Happens at a Mastermind Retreat and Why It Matters for Business Growth 29.06.2026 32m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ A profitable, smooth holiday season is not a lucky accident. It's what happens when someone who actually prepared gets to execute. And the best time to prepare? July. Join me and other retailers in Camp Q4 this summer to set yourself up for a kick-butt Q4! Camp begins with a fireside chat (opening coaching) on July 13th. Grab your sit-upon (fellow Girl Scouts unite!) and join me! Episode Overview I recently hosted my Level Up Mastermind members for a retreat in my town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.  I received so many questions about what actually happens during a retreat like this so I've decided to pull back the curtain and share what we do, why we do it, and what I've learned from gathering ambitious retailers together in person. I talk about how important in-person relationships are, some reflections on how things went, a little business strategy, and leadership development: everything that happens at my low-key high impact retreat. I also share some of my own observations about building a business that aligns with your values rather than following someone else's formula. If you've ever wondered how business growth, meaningful conversations, accountability, and life-first leadership come together in a retail business retreat setting, this episode offers a look behind the scenes. Our Key Topics Why relationships and community matter in business growth What it takes to build a healthy, sustainable business What we did at the retreat: the nuts and bolts of our few days together Why there is no one-size-fits-all formula for success What a life-first business really looks like Key Takeaways For Shop Owners Your business should support your life, not consume it. Throughout the retreat, we focused on the idea that business owners should design their businesses around the life they want to live. Rather than letting business take every available resource, the goal is to create a business that works for you. Healthy businesses require healthy leaders. We spent time discussing how leaders allocate these resources and how thoughtful decisions in these areas affect both personal well-being and business performance. Growth happens through both strategy, reflection, and community. Business progress is not only about learning new tactics. Some of the most meaningful breakthroughs happened during dinners, conversations, and quiet moments when members had time to process ideas and gain new perspectives. Frameworks are useful, but they should be adapted to fit your business. There are proven principles and structures that support success, but each retailer must apply them in a way that reflects their own goals, values, and strengths. Relationships remain one of the most powerful assets in business. This may be my favorite takeaway. From shared learning sessions to informal conversations, the retreat reinforced the value of surrounding yourself with people who challenge, encourage, and support your growth. "Relationships are rocket fuel."  As I reflect on this retreat, I'm reminded that meaningful business growth often comes from creating space to think, connect, and build a business that truly supports the life you want.  Check in with me! • 314. The Memento Generation: Creating More Meaningful Buying Experiences in Retail 22.06.2026 14m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview Fresh off my Level Up Mastermind retreat with retailers from around the world, I'm reflecting on something that feels increasingly important in retail right now: experiences. Your customers are looking for connection, meaning, and events they can remember.  In this episode, I'm sharing my thoughts on some of the findings from a research report from  the Portas Agency titled "The Momento Generation". The concept explores how many younger consumers are placing greater value on memories, shared experiences, and stories over simply acquiring more stuff/consumerism. As independent retailers, this gives us an opportunity to think differently about how we serve our customers. I explore why creating memorable moments may matter more than ever and what that could look like inside our shops and communities. Our Key Topics What the "Memento Generation" is and why it matters for understanding changing consumer behavior. Why younger consumers are prioritizing experiences, memories, and meaning over simply acquiring more products. How independent retailers can create memorable customer experiences that go beyond convenience and transactions. What belonging, community, and shared moments mean for brick-and-mortar businesses today. Why the experience surrounding a product can influence purchasing decisions as much as the product itself.   Key Takeaways For Shop Owners on Meaningful Buying Customers are seeking meaning as much as merchandise. The research from the Portas Agency suggests that many consumers are asking questions beyond "What can I buy?" They're considering how purchases make them feel, what memories they create, and who they can share those experiences with. Independent retailers are uniquely positioned to create memorable experiences. Fast, cheap, and convenient options are widely available. What independent retailers can offer is something more personal, memorable, and difficult to replicate. The focus shifts from selling products to creating moments. Rather than asking how to sell more items, consider how they can create experiences customers remember and talk about long after a purchase. Community and connection continue to matter. Whether through gatherings, events, conversations, or shared experiences, creating opportunities for people to connect can strengthen the role your business plays in their lives. The product still matters, but the experience around it matters too. The research isn't suggesting products are unimportant. Instead, it highlights how the surrounding experience, presentation, and emotional connection can increasingly influence purchasing decisions. "The future belongs to businesses that are creating memories, not just transactions."  What moments are your customers taking home with them beyond the products they purchase? • 313. Why Community Is the Future of Retail with Guest Expert Mark Schaefer 15.06.2026 41m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview In this episode, I sit down with best-selling marketing author and speaker Mark Schaefer to talk about what matters most for independent retailers in a world that's being increasingly shaped by AI. While technology continues to change how customers find the places they love to shop, Mark makes a compelling case that the strongest advantage for brick-and-mortar retailers is still something AI cannot replicate: a completely human experience. We talk about the role of personal branding, community, experiences, and transcendent content in modern retail. Mark shares why human-centered meaningful relationships matter more than marketing tricks and how shop owners can create businesses that people genuinely want to belong to. If you are interested in standing out amongst your peers, staying relevant, and building lasting customer loyalty, we recorded this episode to remind you that being human is your biggest asset in your retail business. Our Key Topics Why AI is changing marketing and customer discovery, and where independent retailers still have an advantage How personal branding helps shop owners build trust and stronger customer relationships What experiences, hospitality, and human connection can offer that technology cannot Why storytelling matters, including Mark's AIR framework: Authentic, Interesting, and Relevant How community differs from an audience, and why belonging creates lasting loyalty What it means to build a business that is meaningful to customers, not just visible Key Takeaways For Shop Owners on Personal Branding and Community Building Your personal brand is a competitive advantage. Mark emphasizes that customers can build relationships with local business owners, employees, and other customers in ways they never can with large online retailers. Being visible, present, and connected to your community helps create trust that technology cannot replace. Community creates loyalty that marketing alone cannot. When customers form relationships with each other through your business, the goodwill from those friendships transfers back to your brand. People continue showing up because they feel connected, not just because they need whatever it is that you are selling. Stories help customers remember and share your business. Mark encourages retailers to tell stories in every customer interaction. Stories give people something meaningful to talk about and create connections that extend beyond a transaction. The AIR framework can guide better storytelling. Stories should be Authentic, Interesting, and Relevant. When customers hear stories that meet those criteria, they are more likely to remember them and share them with others. Meaning matters more than trying to win every technology battle. Rather than obsessing over search rankings or AI visibility, Mark encourages business owners to focus on becoming meaningful to the people they serve. Businesses that create emotional connections have an advantage that technology cannot easily replicate. "The most human company wins." - Mark Schaefer, Marketing Rebellion This conversation left me so giddy. I love the reminder that our greatest opportunity as shop owners isn't simply selling products. It's creating places where people feel seen, connected, and part of something meaningful. • 312. Midyear Business Review: Are You Building a Business or a Passion Project? 08.06.2026 32m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview We have officially reached the middle of the year, and now is the perfect time to pause for just a few minutes to take an honest look at what we're building. Beyond reviewing numbers and planning for the months ahead, I want to pose a bigger question: is your business becoming a valuable asset, or have you simply created a job (that you love!) for yourself? In this episode, I share my thoughts around long-term business value. Could you sell your business right now? Whether selling your business feels years away or not something you've considered yet, the decisions you make now will impact the flexibility, profitability, and sustainability of your business in the future.  A midyear review is about more than looking backward. It's an opportunity to make sure your business is healthy, organized, and positioned to support the life you want while creating options for the future. I talk so much about my desire to work with retailers who plan their lives first. We want to be building businesses that support our lives, not running our lives to support our businesses. So let's talk about it! Our Key Topics Why a midyear review should go beyond sales and goals to evaluate what kind of business you're building How owner dependency impacts the value, sustainability, and future saleability of a business What profitability, cash flow, and clean financials reveal about overall business health Why inventory management plays a critical role in maintaining business value How documented systems and operational processes create stability and freedom for owners What distinguishes a hobby business from a profitable, sellable lifestyle business and why that difference matters   Key Takeaways For Shop Owners on Midyear Checkins 1. Know what you're actually building. A midyear review should go beyond sales numbers and goals. It's important to understand whether you're creating a business that can operate independently or whether the business relies entirely on YOU physically being in the shop to do all of the things. 2. A healthy business is built on more than revenue. Strong sales alone do not create value. If you are not profitable, if your cash flow is struggling, if you have no idea where your money is going; revenue doesn't mean much at all.  3. Systems create freedom. When knowledge, processes, and decision-making live only in the owner's head, everything is harder for everyone. Documented systems allow responsibilities to be shared, delegated, and sustained over time.  4. Inventory deserves regular attention. Inventory may appear as an asset on paper, but aging or stale inventory can tie up cash and reduce flexibility. Reviewing inventory regularly helps keep merchandise fresh and aligned with customer demand.  5. Start preparing before you need to. Many retailers wait until they are tired, ready to retire, or facing unexpected life circumstances before thinking about selling their business. Building business value is an ongoing process that creates more options and less stress in the future. Small steps added up make a huge difference when it comes time to sell. "Exit planning has to start before you get tired." - Wendy Batten I'm working through my midyear review right now and reminding myself that perfection is not the goal. The goal is building a business that feels good to you today and gives you options for tomorrow. • 311. Why Real Connection Matters More Than Ever in the Age of AI with Deanne Fitzpatrick 01.06.2026 29m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview In this episode, I sit down with my friend Deanne Fitzpatrick of Deanne Fitzpatrick Rug Hooking Studio for an honest and raw conversation about AI, authenticity, and what it means to run a meaningful business. We talk about the parts of AI that feel helpful, the parts that feel icky, and why trust and real connection matter more than ever for small business owners. As business owners who have both embraced technology over the years, neither Deanne nor I are anti-AI. But we are cautious and curious about how it's changing what feels like pretty much everything. We share our thoughts on where AI has the ability to support small business owners. We also chat about where we draw the line with AI when it comes to content, creativity, and showing up for our audiences. This conversation is really about staying grounded in what makes our businesses valuable in the first place: real people, real relationships, and building a community through connection. Our Key Topics Authenticity and trust are becoming more important as AI-generated content grows What feels helpful versus "icky" when it comes to AI use in business Meaningful community building matters more than polished marketing How shop owners can use AI technology without losing their voice What happens when businesses prioritize efficiency over real connection Why in-person shopping and human experiences are becoming more valuable How creating your own work helps deepen creativity and personal growth   Key Takeaways For Shop Owners Around AI and Connection Real connection is becoming a competitive advantage. As more content becomes automated and polished, people are craving businesses that feel human, trustworthy, and personal. Showing up as yourself matters. Technology CAN support your business without replacing your voice. We talk about using AI for organization, editing, or idea generation while still keeping the creative and relational parts of the business deeply personal and human-led. Your community wants authentic connection, not perfection. Small imperfections, real conversations, and honest communication help build trust. Customers and communities are looking for businesses that feel genuine and grounded. Creativity and communication should still feel meaningful. Writing your own newsletter, recording your own podcast, or having real conversations may take more time, but those experiences also help you grow as a business owner and human. Simplicity still matters. In a world focused on speed and efficiency, there is real value in slowing down, creating intentionally, and building a business around connection, beauty, and joy. "I think when we show up as we are and we offer our ideas and our creativity and our energy as we are…it's a worthwhile offering." -Deanne Fitzpatrick I hope this conversation gives you space to reflect on how you use AI, how you want to show up in your business, and what kind of connection you want to create with your community. • 310. 7 Things That Might Be Holding You Back in Your Retail Business 25.05.2026 28m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview In this episode of the Creative Shop Talk Podcast, I'm sharing seven common patterns I see repeatedly with independent retailers who are working hard but still feeling stuck. These are habits, mindset patterns, and blind spots that can keep us from reaching the goals we truly want. As I was making this list from conversations with clients, I realized I've experienced every one of these things myself throughout my years in business. Some of the highlights: vague goals, overthinking, avoiding difficult conversations, staying attached to old identities, and the importance of tracking numbers and reviewing what's actually happening in our businesses. My hope is that this episode helps you notice where you may be holding yourself back without even realizing it. If you've been feeling like you're capable of more but can't quite identify what's standing in the way, I hope this episode is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and start getting honest about what needs to change. Our Key Topics Why vague goals make it difficult to create meaningful progress The impact of overthinking and analysis paralysis Trying to build a business without support or mentorship and why that's a bad idea Why you need to stop avoiding uncomfortable conversations, tasks, or realities The importance of regular business and self check-ins Why tracking numbers and data matters for decision making Moving from staying comfortable to stepping into leadership   7 Things That May Be Holding You Back in Your Retail Business You are setting vague goals. Are you being clear or specific about what you actually want to achieve? You are overthinking the how. Getting stuck in analysis paralysis instead of taking the next small step. Remember, done is better than perfect. You are trying to do it alone. Do not allow yourself to avoid support, delegation, coaching, or bringing in help. You are living in an old identity. Are you staying attached to an earlier version of yourself or your role in the business instead of evolving into leadership that no longer serves you, your business, or your customers? As your business evolves, so does your role as CEO. You are ostriching or committing emotional avoidance. Are you avoiding uncomfortable conversations, tasks, truths (i.e. your numbers), or decisions? Sit down for 10 quiet minutes and be honest with yourself about what you are avoiding.  "If you knew the answer, what would it be?"  You are not doing business and self check-ins. Moving week to week without reflecting, reviewing, or paying attention to what's working and what isn't can cause huge issues in your business. You are not tracking anything. Are you avoiding numbers, metrics, and data that help you understand what's really happening in the business?  I hope this episode gives you a few honest places to reflect and helps you move toward the kind of business and life you truly want. • 309. From Good to Great: Dream Bigger Now 18.05.2026 25m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview In this episode, I'm sharing details of a conversation that challenged me to think differently about what's possible in business and life. I've been reflecting on the ways we can reach a point where things feel "good" so we stop stretching toward what could feel even better: more alignment, more joy, and being more fulfilled. Through personal stories and examples from my clients, I'm exploring the idea that growth is not always about doing more: sometimes it's about raising our standards, reimagining what is possible, and allowing ourselves to dream again. I talk about the importance of perspective, support, and asking better questions about what could actually feel great instead of simply acceptable. This episode is a reminder that building a profitable business matters, but so does building a business and life that continue to feel exciting, meaningful, and energizing. Our Key Topics Why "good" can sometimes become a ceiling in business and life Quietly stopping the habit of dreaming bigger or stretching toward new possibilities The importance of outside perspective, coaching, and conversation in expanding what feels possible Personal and client examples of moving from comfortable to more aligned and fulfilling goals Refining standards, branding, leadership, and lifestyle goals over time Building a business that feels profitable, joyful, and aligned with the life you want   Key Takeaways for Shop Owners Good does not always mean complete. I share how many shop owners work hard to reach stability and comfort, then stop questioning what else might be possible. This episode is an invitation to revisit areas that feel "fine" and ask whether they could actually feel even better or more exciting. Perspective from others can help us see possibilities we cannot see alone. Whether through coaching, travel, conversation, or collaboration, outside voices can challenge limitations and expand vision. Sometimes another person can see potential that feels invisible from inside our own business. Growth is not always about bigger businesses or more hustle. This conversation is not about chasing endless growth. I believe stretching toward "great" should support joy, fulfillment, lifestyle goals, and deeper alignment with what matters most. Small shifts over time can completely change a business. I share the story of a client who slowly refined her brand, clientele, merchandising, and team over the course of a year. The transformation did not happen overnight, but consistent changes helped create a business that felt more intentional and aligned. We are capable of more than we often allow ourselves to believe. Throughout the episode, I return to the idea that many limitations are self-imposed. Asking "Why can't I?" opens the door to possibilities that once felt unrealistic or unavailable. • 308. Hospitality is the Product in Brick-and-Mortar Retail with Guest Expert Chris Deferio 11.05.2026 43m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview Struggling shop owners aren't struggling because they need more tools. Perhaps they are struggling because they've moved away from what actually matters for success in retail. In this conversation, I sit down with Chris Deferio of the Keys to the Shop podcast to talk about what really drives success in brick-and-mortar businesses today: the role of hospitality, leadership, and being intentional with training your team. We also talk about how seemingly small decisions can shape the long-term health of a business. Chris shares what he's learned from decades in coffee, from working behind the bar to consulting with shop owners, and how those lessons apply beyond coffee. If you've been feeling pulled toward change in your business, this episode is a grounding reminder of what actually creates loyalty, consistency, and growth in retail. Our Key Topics Chris's journey from barista to consultant and podcast host Why hospitality should be treated as the core product in brick-and-mortar The balance between systems, data, and human connection Hiring and training with intention, starting from values The evolving role of the owner and the importance of leadership structure The risks of distraction, comparison, and overcomplicating the business   Key Takeaways for Shop Owners Hospitality is the product. When we treat hospitality as central to the business, everything else becomes a support system. The experience we create for customers and staff is what drives loyalty and long-term success. Hiring for values is the foundation of everything that follows. Bringing in people who already align with your values makes training and leadership more effective. When you compromise early, it creates ongoing challenges that customers will feel. Training requires intention, not assumption. Many owners expect staff to "figure it out" without clear training and communication. This leads to inconsistent service. Ongoing coaching, feedback, and clarity are essential to maintaining standards. You cannot lead well if you are only reacting. Without structure and intentional time management, it's difficult to make good decisions. Creating space to step back and evaluate allows you to lead instead of constantly putting out fires. The answers you need are often already in your business. Instead of chasing new tools or trends, look at what is already working. Deepening relationships with your team and customers often creates more impact than adding something new. "Hospitality is the product." - Chris Deferio I hope this conversation acts as your invitation to pause and consider where you might go deeper instead of wider in your retail business. • 307. Spring Cleaning Your Retail Business Starts With Your Mindset 04.05.2026 27m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview What if spring cleaning your business had nothing to do with your shelves and everything to do with what's going on in your head? Let me explain. In this episode, I'm talking about spring cleaning your retail business, but not in the way you might expect. We all know how to tidy up our shops, review inventory, or refresh marketing, but knowing what to do is not usually the problem. It is taking the time and action that matters. I'm sharing why the real work often starts with clearing out what is happening in our minds. From the assumptions we are making to the constant consumption of information, this episode is about creating space to think clearly, make decisions, and move forward with intention. This kind of reset can help you feel more grounded and in control of your business again. Our Key Topics The difference between knowing what to do and actually taking action Common areas of business that may need attention like inventory, finances, and marketing The importance of stepping into the CEO role and doing regular check-ins Spring cleaning your mindset, assumptions, and consumption Creating intentional time to think without distractions Identifying what is in your control versus what is not Taking action without judgment and asking for outside perspective when needed   Key Takeaways for Shop Owners You already know what needs attention in your business, the work is in making time and taking action. It is less about learning something new and more about following through on what you already see. Awareness comes first, then action, without judgment. When you can acknowledge what is not working without piling on guilt, it becomes much easier to move forward. Not everything deserves your energy, focus on what you can control. Letting go of what is outside your control creates more space for meaningful progress. Too much consumption can block clarity and action. When you step away from constant input, you give yourself the chance to think and lead more intentionally. Regular reflection and intentional time are essential for running a healthy business. Even small pockets of quiet time can help you reconnect with what actually matters.  Take a 25 minute walk this week without consuming: no podcasts, no music, no phone calls. Just a little time with yourself to check in and notice what is ready to be cleared so you can move forward with more clarity. Let me know how it goes over @wendybatten.biz on Instagram! • 306. How to Handle Donation Requests: A Simple System for Shop Owners 27.04.2026 24m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview I'm hearing from so many shop owners right now about the sheer volume of donation requests coming through their doors and inboxes. Silent auctions, raffles, sponsorships, gift cards: it can feel constant. For many of us, it brings up a mix of emotions ranging from generosity to frustration. In this episode, I'll walk you through a practical way to stay community-minded while also protecting your business. This is about setting a necessary boundary and creating a simple, intentional system. It will allow you to make donations in a way that feels aligned, without the stress or emotional weight that often comes with these requests. You'll leave with a clear approach to setting boundaries, making thoughtful decisions, and turning the right opportunities into meaningful visibility for your shop. Our Key Topics How to navigate the volume of donation requests without overwhelm What to include in a clear donation and marketing budget How to create a simple application process for requests How to filter opportunities based on alignment and fit What to consider when turning donations into visibility opportunities When and how to use systems and boundaries to reduce stress   Key Takeaways for Shop Owners Set a clear budget for donations as part of your marketing plan. When you decide in advance how much you're able to give, it removes the guesswork and emotional decision-making. This helps you stay generous without overextending your business. Use a simple application process for all donation requests. A Google form or application creates consistency and professionalism. It also takes the pressure off in-the-moment decisions and allows you to review requests on your own timeline. Filter requests based on alignment, not obligation. Not every request is the right fit, and that's okay. When you choose based on your values, customer alignment, and brand, your giving feels more intentional and meaningful. Look for visibility and marketing opportunities in the right donations. The right partnerships can introduce your business to new customers. By asking for simple things like signage, email mentions, or bounce-back offers, you can extend the impact of your giving. Create boundaries to remove emotional stress. Clear policies, timelines, and responses help you avoid resentment and decision fatigue. Boundaries allow you to be both generous and a responsible steward of your business. "We can't donate to everyone, and we also can't continue to be upset with everybody that asks."  -Wendy Batten I'd love to hear if this episode inspired you to come up with a donation request application. • 305. Building Loyalty Through Positive Customer Experience 20.04.2026 22m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview In this episode, I'm reframing what customer loyalty really means for independent retailers. Rather than focusing on loyalty programs or post-purchase follow-up, I'll explain how customer loyalty is formed long before a transaction ever happens. From the first impression to the in-store experience, every touchpoint plays a role in shaping how customers feel about your retail business. This episode is your reminder to step back and look at the full customer journey with purpose and intention. I'll share what I'm seeing in shops right now, where opportunities are being missed, and how small, thoughtful refinements can create a stronger, more loyal customer base without making things harder. Our Key Topics Why loyalty begins before the purchase, not after The role of first impressions across digital and physical spaces How store environment, energy, and flow impact customer perception The importance of team training and customer interaction Product curation and intentional inventory decisions Emotional experience as the foundation of loyalty Moving beyond transactional retail to relationship-based experiences   Key Takeaways for Shop Owners Loyalty is built at every touchpoint on the customer's journey through your shop. Every interaction, from discovering your shop online to making a first purchase, is shaping the customer's perception. These moments build trust and connection before money is ever exchanged. Customers decide how they feel about your business before they reach the register. By the time someone is ready to purchase, they have already formed an opinion. The sale is simply the result of everything they experienced leading up to that moment. Store environment, team energy, and product curation all contribute to loyalty. Customers are taking in more than just your products. They are responding to how the space feels, how they are welcomed, and whether everything makes sense together. Customers become loyal based on how they feel while deciding to buy. It's the emotional experience during the decision process that matters most. Feeling comfortable, supported, and inspired is what creates lasting connection. Small, intentional improvements across the customer journey can create meaningful impact. You don't need a complete overhaul to build loyalty. Paying attention to details and refining what's already in place can shift the entire experience. "Customers don't become loyal because of what they bought. They become loyal because of how they felt while they were deciding to buy." -Wendy Batten Take a moment to walk through your business as a customer and notice what they might feel before they ever reach the register. • 304. Hospitality is an Inside Job: How Leadership and Small Moments Shape Your Shop's Reputation with Guest Expert Stephanie Miller Vincent 13.04.2026 39m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview In this episode, we're continuing our series on building an exceptional reputation in our retail businesses by looking at hospitality through a leadership lens. I'm joined by Stephanie Miller Vincent, founder of SMillerVision and former guest on the podcast. We dig into what hospitality really means beyond being friendly or providing good service. We talk about why it starts inside your business and how your team experience directly impacts your customer experience. We also explore how consistency, culture, and attention to small details shape how your shop is felt by customers. This isn't about scripts or surface-level service. It's about the standards you set, the care you show your team, and the everyday moments that quietly build your reputation. If you've ever thought hospitality is just one more thing to add to your plate, this conversation will help you see it differently and understand where to focus instead. Our Key Topics Why reputation is built from the inside, starting with leadership and clarity The difference between good customer service and true hospitality How team culture and care influence customer experience Why small, consistent actions matter more than big gestures The role of leadership in modeling and reinforcing hospitality Common misconceptions about hospitality in retail settings The impact of trust, communication, and involving your team How micro moments shape brand perception and customer loyalty Key Takeaways for Shop Owners You can be friendly and provide service and still not be hospitable. Completing tasks and being polite isn't the same as creating a meaningful experience. Hospitality is about how you make people feel, not just what you do for them. We can't expect anything from the people we lead that we don't model ourselves. Your team is watching how you show up every day. If you want a certain level of care and attention, it has to start with you demonstrating it first. Hospitality is creating a feeling or emotion, not just completing tasks. Customers remember how they felt in your space more than what they bought. That emotional connection is what builds loyalty and trust over time. The little things are what build or erode your reputation over time. Small, everyday details often go unnoticed until they become a problem. Paying attention to them consistently is what strengthens your brand. If the small things don't matter, the big things don't matter either. Ignoring minor issues signals to your team that details aren't important. Over time, that mindset affects everything from culture to customer experience. Take a moment to notice the small things in your shop this week and consider what they might be saying about your leadership and your brand. • 303. How to Build an Exceptional Retail Brand That Attracts the Right Customers 06.04.2026 24m
With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Episode Overview In this first episode of a three-part series, I'm talking about what it really means to create an exceptional brand in today's retail environment. I'm sharing what I'm seeing in shops right now and why being "fine" or average is no longer enough to stand out or stay relevant. We'll look at how your reputation shapes your brand, why trust and meaningful connection matter more than ever, and how to start refining your brand to attract the right customers. This is about getting clear on who you serve, how you want them to feel, and how your brand shows up in every part of your business. Our Key Topics Why "fine" or average brands struggle in today's retail environment The difference between attracting the right customers and trying to get more shoppers What it means to build a brand based on trust and meaningful purchases Why your brand is defined by what customers say about you How to audit your brand through customer experience, feeling, and consistency The impact of pricing, merchandising, and service on brand perception Why consistency builds trust and inconsistency erodes it The role of brand evolution and revisiting your strategy over time Key Takeaways for Shop Owners Your brand is what people say about you, not your logo, colors, or fonts. It's shaped by their experience, what they remember, and what they share with others after they leave your shop. Trying to serve everyone waters down your brand and makes it less effective. Getting clear on who you are for allows you to create a stronger, more focused experience. Great brands are not for everyone. Customers are choosing what feels right, not just what is available. Meaningful connection and trust are influencing buying decisions more than convenience alone. Your pricing, service, and experience all communicate your brand before you say a word. Every detail sends a message about who you are and who you are for. Consistency in experience, messaging, and service is what builds trust over time. When things feel inconsistent, it creates hesitation and weakens your reputation.
