Bob Iger: Power, Succession, and Leading Disney Through Upheaval 06.10.2026 33mFew executives have had to make as many high-stakes calls, over as many years, as former Disney CEO Bob Iger. In this conversation with former HBS dean Nitin Nohria, Iger shares what he’s learned about the decisions that really belong to the CEO: where to spend your time, when to step into a problem, when to get out of the way, how to shape culture, and how to lead when crisis becomes a constant.Drawing on ideas from his new book, The CEO: The Role, the Reality, the Responsibility (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GD87T42Z), Nohria presses Iger on the realities of leading at the very top—including what Disney got wrong in its previous succession process and what Iger learned from having to return as CEO. They also discuss transforming Disney’s creative engine and using the power of the CEO role without letting that power distort your judgment.00:00 How Iger Reinvented Disney Animation02:12 Respecting the Past Without Being Trapped by It05:01 How a CEO Shapes Company Culture06:57 How CEOs Should Spend Their Time09:38 What Disney Got Wrong About Succession13:09 Returning to Disney as CEO14:51 How Leaders Should Manage Creative Decisions16:13 When—and How—to Intervene18:46 When CEOs Should Speak Out21:19 Staying Grounded When You Have Power23:28 Who Tells the CEO the Truth?25:01 The Responsibility CEOs Shouldn’t UnderestimateBooks, tools, and more: store.hbr.orgFollow us:https://hbr.org/https://www.linkedin.com/company/harvard-business-review/https://www.facebook.com/HBR/https://twitter.com/HarvardBizhttps://www.instagram.com/harvard_business_reviewSign up for Newsletters: https://hbr.org/email-newsletters#HarvardBusinessReview #YourCareer #Career #Job #Work #Business #Harvard #HarvardBusinessSchool Copyright © 2026 Harvard Business School Publishing. How Salary Transparency Can Assist You (and Your Workplace) 06.10.2026 18mHow Salary Transparency Can Help You (and Your Workplace) 26 Oct 2023 --- How much money do you make? Did that question make you nervous? Uncomfortable? Or, maybe, excited? Historically speaking, talking about your salary (especially at work) was off limits. But things are changing — “salary transparency” is becoming the new norm, and for good reason. When people are aware of how much those around them make, everyone gets paid more fairly, which makes workplaces more equitable. But what does salary transparency actually look like in the workplace? How do you broach the subject with your coworkers, boss, friends, and even strangers? Ascend editor Kelsey Alpaio talks with David Burkus, an organizational psychologist, to learn more about the pros and cons of salary transparency, how it can play out at the company level, and how to make it work for you. She also speaks with Hannah Williams, a content creator who makes a living off of asking strangers how much money they make, and Carolyn Kopprasch, the Chief of Staff at Buffer, a company who is practicing “radical transparency” by listing all of their employees’ salaries online. Mastering the Skill of Persuasion | HBR IdeaCast | Podcast 06.10.2026 34mMastering the Art of Persuasion | HBR IdeaCast | Podcast 21 Dec 2022 --- Jonah Berger, professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, says that most of us aren’t approaching persuasion the right way. Pushing people to behave how you’d like them to or believe the same things you do just doesn’t work, no matter how much data you give or how many emotional appeals you make. Studying both psychology and business, he’s found better tactics for bringing people over to your side. One of the keys? Asking questions so people feel like they’re making the decision to change. Berger is the author of the book The Catalyst: How to Change Anyone’s Mind. What Having a "Growth Mindset" Actually Means 06.10.2026 5mWhat Having a "Growth Mindset" Actually Means 9 Feb 2022 --- Individuals who believe their talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others tend to achieve more than those who believe their talents are innate gifts. 00:00 The meaning of "growth mindset" has become distorted 00:59 Misconception 1: "I already have it, and I always have" 01:27 Misconception 2: A growth mindset is just about praising and rewarding effort 01:54 Misconception 3: Just espouse a growth mindset, and good things will happen 02:16 Here are some traits of companies that encourage growth mindset 02:50 But, we all have our own fixed-mindset triggers to overcome This is because they worry less about looking smart and they put more energy into learning. When entire companies embrace a growth mindset, their employees report feeling far more empowered and committed; they also receive far greater organizational support for collaboration and innovation. In contrast, people at primarily fixed-mindset companies report more of only one thing: cheating and deception among employees, presumably to gain an advantage in the talent race. Based on the HBR article by Carol Dweck: What Having a “Growth Mindset” Actually Means (https://hbr.org/2016/01/what-having-a-growth-mindset-actually-means). This video is co-produced with @EMERITUS. While acknowledging much uncertainty remains, he is largely encouraged by their responses to the crisis as companies look out for employees, customers, suppliers and most importantly, the communities they serve. He implores those leaders to continue the charge, and asks others to join the fight. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices -
Want to Be Happier? Cherish Time Over Money 06.10.2026 8mWant to Be Happier? Value Time Over Money 18 Nov 2020 --- Here’s how to know if you’re making enough time for happiness, and what to do if you’re not. A preponderance of evidence shows that the feeling of having enough time — “time affluence” — is now at a record low in the United States. This situation is so severe it could even be described as a “famine” — a collective cultural failure to effectively manage our most precious resource, time. Time poverty exists across all economic strata, and its effects are profound. Research shows that those who feel time-poor experience lower levels of happiness and higher levels of anxiety, depression, and stress. They experience less joy. They laugh less. They exercise less and are less healthy. Their productivity at work is diminished. They are more likely to get divorced. Harvard Business School’s Ashley Whillans offers advice on how to reclaim your time--and be happier.
