As it develops, it's expected to bring droughts and wildfires to parts of Australia, South America and southern Africa, while coastal Peru and Ecuador face the threat of torrential rain and flooding. -
Return of the sleeper train in Europe 19.10.2026 2mThe Sun has set, and you're headed to a train station in Stockholm with your overnight bag. You board the sleeper train, change into your comfortable clothes, enjoy the scenery through the window for a while before laying your head down to rest. Snoring from the other passengers in your shared cabin delays your bedtime, but the gentle motion and white noise eventually send you to sleep. The next morning, just over 12 hours later, you wake up in Germany's second largest city, Hamburg. "It still sounds like a long time, but you go to sleep, and it's such a nice atmosphere on the train," says Julia Senninger, a fan of sleeper trains. Before budget airlines made flights across Europe so quick and cheap, sleeper trains were a popular way to cover large distances without wasting daylight or paying for a place to stay. After a period of decline, sleeper trains in Europe are making a comeback.Belgian-Dutch company European Sleeper launched the Brussels to Milan route in September 2026 and has announced a new route connecting Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden, scheduled to open in 2028. Other train companies Trenitalia and Nightjet have also announced plans for new international routes. Companies are rushing to meet high demand. The rise in popularity is partly due to changing attitudes and increased awareness surrounding climate change. The carbon footprint of an electric-powered train is just a fraction of a flight. But there's more to it. Sleeper train fan Julia Senninger says trains are simply more fun. You meet more people and can have interesting conversations. Cat Jones, founder of the flight-free travel agency Byway, says, "The point of travel is the experience rather than just the arrival." So, people are buying into the idea that the journey to your destination is also part of the trip. Besides the convenience of starting and ending your journey in a city centre, there's also a sense of romance and adventure when you imagine whizzing through unknown landscapes and foreign villages while you sleep. In Europe, the sleeper train comeback does not come without challenges. Competing with budget airlines, some sleeper train routes have disappeared, even while new ones have launched. Problems with infrastructure, cost and availability mean that the high demand for a more sustainable travel option is not currently being met. -

Is social media still 'social'? 15.10.2026 2mFor many people, social media is a normal part of everyday life. It's used to keep in touch, entertain and follow what's happening in the world. But numbers from DataReportal indicate that the average use of social media is around two hours 21 minutes a day. That's nearly 15 hours per week or about 32 days a year! The same report also mentions that people are using social media more passively. This means they're spending a lot of time scrolling on their feed, sending memes and reacting to things with emojis instead of sending messages. Could it be that social media platforms are negatively impacting the way we interact with people, and are they taking time away from us actually being social? One study looked at what happened when social media was deliberately limited. In The effect of self-monitoring limited social media use on psychological well-being, researchers in the United States studied 230 university students. One group was asked to limit social media use to 30 minutes a day, while the other continued without a limit. After two weeks, the group limiting its use reported lower levels of loneliness, depression, anxiety and FOMO. Sleep is another part of the picture. For many people, scrolling through social media has become part of their bedtime routine when they should be winding down to rest. Research published by the National Library of Medicine has examined the effects of blue light from electronic screens. This light can affect the body's natural sleep-wake cycle and increase alertness. Reducing screen time before bed may therefore help some people prepare for sleep. Better sleep can also provide more energy for work, hobbies and lay the groundwork for more successful and fulfilling face-to-face social interactions. These findings do not necessarily mean that you have to completely quit social media. Instead, it may be worth considering how much time is being spent online, and what that time could be used for instead. Small changes might include moving the social media app away from the home screen, using social media only at certain times, or accessing it through a computer rather than the phone you probably have with you all the time. The idea is not to disconnect from the online world completely, but to create a better balance between online and offline life. Reducing the use of social media could free up time to take part in more rewarding hobbies and encourage you to connect with people in real life rather than through a screen. -

Tulsa Remote 11.10.2026 3mI first heard about Tulsa Remote, I felt like it was kismet. I was thinking about leaving the Bay area where I was living in San Francisco. And so, I was searching around for, you know, different locations like researching where, you know, what's the cost of living like? What is the quality of life like in different cities? And I looked at all the, kind of, obvious things that I think people migrate from California to, which were Portland, Austin, Seattle. And, you know, I just kept coming up with the fact that those cities have, kind of, been overplayed at this point. And when I was doing this research, an article for Tulsa Remote popped up in my news feed, and I thought, like, that's super interesting. Ten thousand dollars to move somewhere. But then I was also, had to, like, take a step back and go "Where is Tulsa, Oklahoma?" 但随后我也得退一步想:“俄克拉何马州塔尔萨市到底在哪儿?”Tulsa Remote is an innovative program which seeks to bring remote workers from across the country with various diverse skill sets in order for them to have an opportunity to join our community. The program was created as it's truly an additive talent program which brings people with jobs to Tulsa in order to see a better life for themselves and their families. I made this list and I said, you know "What do I need? Do I need 700 restaurants? No, I probably need, like, three restaurants. Do I need all of these bars? No, but I do want some culture. I do want a sense of community. I would like, you know, a reasonable cost of living, the ability to buy a house." I never anticipated even when I was flying out here, that it was something that I was seriously considering. I was, kind of, like, "This is interesting. I'm going to go with an open mind. I'm going to see what this is about. But probably, like, this is probably not going to happen." And by the end of three days, I was sitting there with another participant that had come to visit and we looked at each other, we said, he was from New York and we said, "Are we doing this? Are we actually going to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma?" And those folks are looking for a higher quality of life. They're looking for more space. They're looking for the ability to purchase a home. They're looking for the opportunity to engage more deeply with the community. They're looking for that presence where they know people by their first names. And that's something that Tulsa can provide. I rolled into town and I immediately had 50 plus connections. I can't imagine, like, trying to make that solo move to a new town as a remote worker. And how do you even start making those connections, right? I mean, we had instant community built-in already for us. They helped us, you know, even with simple things. "I don't know how to change my driver's license." You know, like, people from the program would help us with this. The ten-thousand-dollar headline number for Tulsa Remote grabs attention. However, the disbursement of the checks really just de-risks the proposition of moving to Tulsa. We found that people come for many different reasons. Cost of living, quality of life, ease, lack of pollution, all kinds of reasons. I felt so at home that I have now purchased a home here because it is affordable. I purchased a home. I got a boyfriend. I mean, I feel like I'm the Tulsa Remote success story.
Black magician 10.10.2026 3mWhen it comes to magic, there's no logical solution why did that coin vanish from your hand? Then, the next things is, do it again or do something else miraculous. Is magic real or is magic an illusion? I'd like to show you what comes to mind just as an example. And we're just going to use these three half-dollars right here. Focus on this first one. Three coins, two hands, no sleeves, no bracelets. So, you think of things happening that's impossible, but you're making the impossible possible and you're also creating astonishment. So, when you think about magic, you have to think about creativity and most importantly, making the impossible possible. What is real? So, I got started in magic, not when I was young like most people. I got started in magic when I was in graduate school at Penn State studying health education research. It was just a hobby for me, something to do to just to pass the time, card tricks. Me and a group of friends, we used to get together and do card tricks. So, I just took a leap of faith and I just said I'm going to give myself one year. If it doesn't work out in one year, I'll just go back to school, get a job and just continue on with life. Well, one year ended up being 16 years and I haven't looked back yet. So, that's when I decided I want to do magic full time. I believe that every artist should use their platform to talk about greater issues beyond their art. So, there's some elements in my show that are subtle and then some that are not subtle, that I speak about those issues and I let people into my world and what I think about it. For example, I was performing in Iowa one time. It was at a college campus but it was two hours outside, two-and-a-half hours outside of Des Moines, Iowa. I get there. I set up. I'm behind the curtain. I peek out. 500 people here. I was like, "Oh my gosh. Okay, I know exactly what I'm going to say." As soon as the emcee announced me, I walked on stage. The first words out of my mouth is, "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming to the show. When I got off the plane this morning, the Black population increased by 100 percent." Now, it came off as a joke but as they say, there's truth in comedy. That's proof that some stereotypes are true. And it resonated with everyone because they realized, wow, this is not a diverse town. Wow, I've never seen a Black magician before, but we've always been out there. As a matter of fact, one part of my show, I'll talk about the very first American-born magician by the name of Richard Potter. So, prior to Houdini, prior to Doug Henning, prior to David Copperfield, prior to David Blaine, the very first magician on American soil was a Black man. And that's something to be proud about because people like Richard Potter, Henry Box Brown, Hiawatha Johnson Jr., these are all African American magicians. If I could see it, I could be it. -
Let growth go beyond skin color 09.10.2026 3mWe were at the Union at the university. That's basically a place where people come and relax and you check your emails and your class schedules. And I just happened to see this head of curly hair and I had to get closer to her. And the closer I got, the better she looked. And I had to introduce myself. So, here we are 20 years later. I have three kiddos. Isaac is our oldest. Ian is our middle child. Isabella is our youngest. She's seven-and-a-half. We homeschool them. We have for the last five-and-a-half years. Our children, they do have the best of both worlds in having a Black father and a white mother. In life, they don't have to think about choosing a side. I'm originally from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines which is in the eastern Caribbean. I was evacuated due to a volcano in 1979. I was seven years old at that time, came to United States, lived in New York City for a few years. And I also was in the military myself. The only questions that the kids have asked us about race is, "Dad, why is your skin darker than Mom's?" 孩子们问过的唯一关于种族的问题是:“爸爸,为什么你的皮肤比妈妈的深?”And, so, I went ahead and took a DNA test and I explained all that to them. Daddy is 50 percent Nigerian. Daddy is 25 percent from Sierra Leone. Daddy is 11 percent Scottish. Daddy has four percent Native American. Daddy has three percent Asian. So, I break it down for them.11%的苏格兰血统, 4%的印第安人血统,还有3%的亚洲血统。 As far as what we're teaching them, it's what's appropriate for their age. We don't put them in that environment where they can be harmed or anyone can share their negativity with them. So, we protect our children. They're still trying to learn how to do their multiplication tables, you know. So, the issue of slavery and systemic racism, you know, that's not at their level at this point. But we're not clueless that it's there. And in due time, as those discussions come into play, he's like you're old enough, you're mature enough, it's time for you to learn this. And it may come up because our child has a question, or it may come up because of something they're exposed to. Couple months ago, there was protests right here in our neighborhood. They chose South Lincoln neighborhoods, where we live, because they felt that they needed to expose South Lincoln. So, the kids got to see that first-hand right here at the end of our street and what that looked like and it was a peaceful protest. But then when they see something on the news that's violent and people are literally hurting each other and causing vandalism, that's not a peaceful protest. That's literally riots. And so, I've talked to them about knowing that we live in Nebraska and in some regards their exposure looks very, very different than if we lived on the East or the West Coast. -
Why we like collecting things 08.10.2026 3mPeople collect all sorts of things. I collect fridge magnets, so my fridge has slowly become a colourful map of everywhere I've been. I also have fond memories of collecting rocks and shells from the beach with my mum when we’d visit the coast in summer. It’s true that some people collect natural objects such as fossils and interesting stones, while others bring home souvenirs from their travels. There are also people collecting miniature versions of real commercial products and tiny replicas of familiar objects, for example scaled-down retro toys, classic board games and action figures. In this way, collectables can be both decorative and functional, giving us something nostalgic to look at or fiddle with when bored. But why do people have such a strong desire to collect things? One explanation is that collecting gives us a sense of order and achievement. Happiful, a mental health and wellbeing magazine, wrote that adding to a collection creates a sense of progress and accomplishment. According to an article published in the Journal of Consumer Research, titled Seeking Structure in Collections: Desire for Control Motivates Engagement in Collecting, collecting can help people feel more in control. It explains that collections can become an extension of our identity. The things we collect reflect our hobbies, interests and loyalties. However, not everyone believes collecting is beneficial. Advocates of minimalism argue that owning fewer possessions improves wellbeing. As Beverley D'Silva reported for the BBC, the simplicity associated with a minimalist lifestyle may even contribute to greater happiness. From this perspective, filling our homes with collections can seem more like unnecessarily hoarding clutter. There is also an important distinction between thoughtfully curating your collection and simply accumulating more possessions. The Journal of Consumer Research article warns that some collectors can be drawn into excessive spending, especially when companies release new or rare additions to collections that were once considered complete. In those cases, collecting may be driven less by passion and more by pressure. Despite this, collecting remains as popular as ever. Perhaps the reason collecting endures is simple – collections tell stories. And displaying these collections can be just as satisfying as finding them. Happiful describes collections as a kind of self-portrait, reflecting our interests, personality and memories. Whether it's fridge magnets, shells or action figures, the real value often lies not in the objects themselves, but in the memories and meanings attached to them. -
Part-human part-mouse brain developed in science breakthrough 07.10.2026 1mWhile mice with partly-human brains might sound a Kafkaesque experiment, the scientists say that these are not mice that think like humans, rather they're animals that are altered so that some of their brain tissue is human. The researchers engineered mice to develop almost none of their own cerebralcortex, that's the outer layer that's sometimes referred to as grey matter. It handles higher-level thinking, memory and senses. They then used skin cells taken from humans, reprogrammed them and grew them into pieces of brain-like tissue called organoids – collections of connected living brain cells. When these organoids were implanted into the mice, they formed connections with the rest of the brain and the spinal cord, functioning like brain tissue. Having working human brain cells inside a living animal, the scientists say, gives them a new way to understand the biological causes and develop treatments for brain disorders, including dementia, epilepsy and cerebral palsy. The study raises questions about what it means to change the brain of an animal and exactly how theselaboratorymice will experience the world. So, there'll be ongoing discussions weighing the scientific value of these mice against these ethical challenges. -
Slum church 06.10.2026 2mFor 14 years, we do it every Friday around this time. We come out and we feed people, right?14年来,我们每周五差不多这个时候都会做这件事。我们出来给人们分发食物,对吧?We feed them first the spiritual word of God, we call it and then, we give them physical food. We let them know that "Hey, you don't have to come to listen to the word of God in order for us to give you food. If you just want to come when we're serving, you can come when we're serving. You don't have to listen to me. I'm nothing special. I don't have nothing great to say to you except for what's in the word of God." The hardest hit place in Los Angeles, still praising God, still giving him the glory, still coming out on Friday nights. And what I've started to notice is happening is that more and more people are coming back every week. There are all kinds of people who come here. There are people who are housed. There are about 9,000 people who are housed right here in Los Angeles. And what's in Skid Row, what's called Single Residency Occupancies, right there are little small apartments, kind of like the size of a jail cell, a small jail cell. There's a lot of good people down here, but it's like the has-beens, the ex-gang members, the ex-pimps or prostitutes, ex-parolees, ex-probation or their family just forgot about them. So, they end up coming down here. It's something down here and it's kind of like Paul, when he said in the church, during the, excuse me, "you can stay down here or you can go to heaven". When you come to Skid Row, you have to put on your Ephesians 6:18, your whole armor of God. Because even when you don't want to do something, you see somebody doing something, so you end up wanting to do it. About 400,000 people are at risk of facing eviction due to COVID-19 and all our elected officials are doing are passing eviction moratoriums. Well, after the moratorium, somebody has to pay that rent, right?暂停之后,总得有人付那笔租金,对吧?And so, after the moratorium, all landlords are going to do is proceed with evictions, right, with the eviction process. And so, we're asking them to cancel rent. It's small movements like this that will shift theparadigm. We can't focus on the hate. We can't focus on what's going on in Washington D.C. We need to focus right here at home, individually with each person you meet and see. -
Very hot drinks may increase cancer risk, study says 05.10.2026The Oxford University team behind the study says any drink at or above 65C is "very hot" and poses a potential risk. Compared with people who drank "warm" beverages, those who consumed "very hot" ones had around a three times higher risk of squamouscell oesophageal cancer. There are several thousand cases each year in the UK, but experts stress the overall chance of getting this cancer of the gullet is still low. Smoking and drinking alcohol are far bigger established risk factors, although waiting a few minutes for your hot drink to cool a bit is advisable. -
Dolphin research is dedicated to animal conservation. 05.10.2026 3mDolphins are what we call charismatic megafauna, which means that people view them as charismatic. People get excited about some animals more than they get excited about others. But that's okay, because then we can use that to get them to conserve in general. So, if they're conserving the dolphins that means we're conserving their habitat, which means we are conserving all the animals that live in that habitat as well. Hi, guys. My name is Dr. Kelly Jaakkola. I am a cognitive researcher, right now work with dolphins. You want to do a high five? No? This one? You can't really reach. I know it is hard to reach up here. For other people, they might get inspired by the dolphin's beauty or their athleticism etc. I know. Very nice. I know. Oh, you want to come play too? What do you think? For me it was watching them think. Wow, now it's yourturn? Now it's yourturn? So, Dolphin Research Center is a non-profit research and education facility in the Florida Keys. And there are a number of questions that you can't answer in the wild. You'll see situations where they seem to be cooperating. They seem to be doing the same thing at the same time. But you can't tell from just looking at that whether or not they're understanding cooperation or if they're just doing something at the same time. In this study we set up a game. And the game was, we had two buttons and to win the game, the dolphins had to press the buttons at the same time within a one second window which is really, really close. So, in order to show that they understand cooperation, you have to sometimes send them at different times. Okay, so, Reese was sent first. And you see he doesn't go immediately to his button. And now Delta was sent and we'll see, and they did it! By the end of this study, they were pressing an average of a third of a second apart which is really tight coordination. The most obvious next step is okay, well how are they doing it? Are the dolphins using some sort of verbal communication? Maybe they are using synchrony, so maybe they sync up with each other and swim together etc. Other questions we can look at are: are there ways that that cooperation in the wild might be disrupted? So, for example, if they are using a kind of vocal communication, then noise pollution might get in the way of that. Alright, are you guys ready? Any sort of facility has to have a way of supporting their animals. And for us, that largely comes from the visitors that walk through the door. One of the big roles that marine mammal facilities play is getting people to make a connection in order to get people to conserve and then care. And it's that moment of connection that is the start of conservation mindedness. You know, it's fine to give people information. Information is great. But that information is only useful if people care enough to actually go out and do something. -
Service Dogs and Surfing 04.10.2026 3mRicochet was trained as a service dog but she was not placed because she likes to chase little animals, critters, squirrels. She would not make it as a service dog, but she also surfs. So, she surfs with people who have disabilities. So now I call her 'a surface dog'. She was eight weeks old. I had her in a kiddie pool and there was a boogie board and I kind of tapped it to invite her on it and she climbed on and had really good balance. So, from that I just continued playing around with it. I lay on the board and she stands behind me. There's a pusher, you know, another individual that will push them into the wave and Ricochet is really good at balancing the board for Hunter and in the beginning of his surfing that he needed that. I'm the only one who surfs in the family. There's a lot of trust that goes on with it, a lot of empowerment, especially kids with autism that don't get to really do anything on their own. There's usually supervision, but when they're in the water with Ricochet, they feel in control. And I always say to them, "Thank you for teaching my dog how to surf." So, they feel like they're the ones helping the dog instead. And it's just such an empowering feeling for the child. I'm Staff Sergeant Persons Griffith and I'm a PTSD awareness advocate. How was it? It's good. It's nice having her out there. It helps. When I met Ricochet, that was one of the more significant overwhelming moments in my life. I was having a really hard time and so I finally had a breakthrough and I realized how PTSD was affecting me. Ricochet was like a mirror for me. You can't hide things from her. So, she already knows exactly what's going on. And she just kind of reaches into your soul and pulls it out in front of you and says, you know, brings it to your attention and says, you know, this is what's going on. This is how you really feel. Let's deal with this. Let's accept it. Let's talk about it. After I got divorced, I moved down to Carlsbad to live with my parents and kind of recover from the divorce and the PTSD from the divorce. And we had physical abuse in that, you know, we had like the emotional abuse, all that abuse. So, I was kind of broken. When I met Ricochet, I felt like she really was like the glue that put my soul, my soul was broken and she put those pieces back together again and helped me rebuild my soul and rebuild my being. Sometimes she's very assertive as far as like she sticks her nose on you. She, earlier today, she paws at you because she knows like okay, you need to just stop. Look in my eyes, relax. And she just relieves like that stress or anxiety that you might have. And what I label Ricochet as is emotional rescue. So, she connects with people instantly and goes very deep into their soul with what she can pick up from them. And then she alerts and responds to whatever that emotion is. It's something that is instinctual. I didn't teach it to her. So, it's been a progression of growth, of me learning more about what dogs are capable of. So, the biggest thing is me listening to her. Ricochet's the type of dog that needs human interaction. She's 12-and-a-half. So, I was afraid that after two months of not being with people, that she would check out and her life would end sooner than it should. So, after two months, I thought a lot and did a lot of research and decided that the benefit far outweighs the risk to meet with people one-on-one. We call them house calls or curbside comfort. -
The UK's favourite type of humour 03.10.2026 2mOver two thirds of Brits agree that being able to laugh at yourself, or what we call 'self-deprecating humour', is a defining part of British culture, according to a recent survey by the charity Comic Relief. British comedian Sir Lenny Henry says it's not about putting yourself down, it's about bringing people together. After years of doing stand-up comedy, Lenny says that laughing at yourself is "one of the quickest ways to feel connected to a room full of strangers". But when is it good, and when is it bad, to make fun of yourself? Can it be taken too far? When a person points out their own flaws in a light-hearted way, it can make them seem more human and make others feel comfortable. A 2025 study called 'When Laughter Hurts and Helps' linked the joy of being laughed at with higher social connectedness, in other words, a greater sense of belonging to a group. Conversely, the trait 'gelotophobe', or someone who fears being laughed at, has been linked to greater friendship avoidance and lower life satisfaction. Even leaders might benefit from self-deprecating humour. Lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business Naomi Bagdonas says that for today's leaders, 'Humour is an elixir for trust and an antidote to arrogance'. Making lightof negative situations can also be a coping mechanism. Imagine you're working on a group project, and something goes wrong. While everyone is panicking and trying to find someone to blame, you say sarcastically, "Well, this is going well!" This gives people permission to laugh a bit, and they might feel more positively about the situation. The challenge doesn't vanish, but at least people feel less tense and could feel more able to deal with the situation. A 2024 study published in Europe's Journal of Psychology found that maintaining a humorous perspective when things go wrong can lead to greater resilience. Of course, there's always a balance. While self-deprecating humour can bring people closer and make bad situations less overwhelming, it's important that it doesn't come from a place of bitterness and self-hatred. It's best to make jokes about yourself only once you've made peace with the flaw or mistake you're making fun of. -
